The band consists of founder, singer/songwriter, and bass player Matt O’Brian (Thunderbody); Matt’s brother, Chris O’Brian (Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad), on drums; and Mike Martinez on guitar. The band’s goal is to achieve an enticing sound to guide Matt’s original songs. https://www.facebook.com/Mattobriansflyingobject/

Live! Summer Concert Series: The Ron Carter Trio in Concert
Event summary
Bassist Ron Carter brings his trio, featuring Donald Vega on piano and Russell Malone on guitar.
Event details

Ron Carter is the most recorded bassist in jazz history, having contributed to legendary jazz recordings by Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Wayne Shorter and many more while also recording over 40 albums as a band leader (or co-leader.) He is the bass player on the culturally resonant, and universally referenced “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” by Gil Scott-Heron.

A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Carter is one of the many great musicians that enriched Rochester, NY’s local music history by playing at the now mythical Pythodd Room on Clarissa Street. Carter was elected to the Rochester Music Hall of Fame in 2015 and the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame in 2012.

Rochester Fringe Festival: Carnival of the Animals - Performance 1
Event summary
Cordancia and BIODANCE are excited to collaborate again on a unique multidisciplinary event at this year’s Rochester Fringe Festival – with The Hochstein School serving as a Rochester Fringe Festival venue for the first time!
Event details

A beloved and entertaining classic, Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals is a musical portrait of various animals – including a lion, an elephant, and a swan – often performed with narration. Our narrator, Rochester storyteller Jay Stetzer, describes the animals in words with his own humorous take on a text by Ogden Nash. BIODANCE dancers join Cordancia musicians with choreography by Missy Pfohl Smith and costumes by Natalia Lisina.

The carnival atmosphere continues with Darius Milhaud’s Le Boeuf sur le toit (The Ox on the Roof), performed by Cordancia and further enhanced by digital media projection by W. Michelle Harris. The lively opening theme returns again and again, with playful interjections of Brazilian tangos and other dances.

Compass is a solo dance work that premiered in June 2024, inspired by Paul Klee’s painting “Strong Dream.” The piece features dancer Alaina Olivieri and new quadrophonic music (surround sound) by Austin White. This non-narrative, dynamic, and edgy work plays with sound, light, and movement as if a “deer in headlights,” a metaphor for someone in a mental state of high arousal caused by anxiety, fear, panic, surprise, or confusion.

Cordancia Chamber Orchestra performs classical music concerts throughout the year at various locations in the greater Rochester area. Their award-winning programming blends eclectic, vibrant, lesser-known music with traditional classical repertoire.

BIODANCE is a contemporary repertory dance company based in Rochester, NY, and directed by Missy Pfohl Smith, who also directs the Institute for the Performing Arts and the Program of Dance and Movement at University of Rochester.

Location:  The Hochstein School, 50 North Plymouth Avenue, Rochester, NY 14614

As an organization that deeply values diversity, The Hochstein School stands in solidarity with all marginalized communities who are targeted with microaggressions of hate and with violence. We denounce any injustices perpetrated towards them. We are committed to speaking out against all forms of racism and bigotry and will continue our work in bringing unity and inclusiveness to all - at Hochstein and throughout our community.

The Hochstein School, founded in commemoration of genius and dedicated to providing access to opportunity, is a vibrant community of musicians, dancers, and supporters who choose to come together in this historic and inspiring place to develop in themselves, and in each other, the ability to speak and communicate through the making of music and dance. We do this with the conviction that music nurtures, enriches, and energizes every human life, and that the joy of making music, and all the expressive arts that it inspires, holds the key to creating a better world.
