Spotlight on Faculty – Lyrical Landscapes
Event summary
Featuring vocalists Crystal Sellers Battle, Lydia Brown, Michael Brown, Elizabeth Lind, Allison Maney, Gwen Paker, and Jennifer Phillips with Catharine Baek, piano; Andrew Brown, clarinet; and Bethany McLean, flute.
Event details

The repertoire ranges from established favorites like Schubert’s “The Shepherd on the Rock” and “Flower Duet” from Delibes’ Lakmé to lesser-known gems like John Corigliano’s “Three Irish Songs” and Augusta Holmès’ “Les Serenades,” as well as selections from musical theatre and jazz standards.

Admission at the door is $10 per person, with a $20 family maximum. Concerts are free to Hochstein students/families, faculty, and staff. The concert lasts about an hour, and is followed by a “meet the artists” reception.

Philharmonia, Sinfonia, & Concertino Concert
Event summary
Musicians in Hochstein’s Philharmonia Orchestra, Sinfonia Strings, and Concertino Strings give a free joint concert.

Hochstein’s Philharmonia Orchestra (grades 6-11) is directed by John Fetter and Matt Osika, Sinfonia Strings (grades 4-9) is directed by John Fetter and Terry Smith, and Concertino Strings (grades 1-5) is directed by Marcos Kreutzer.

Live from Hochstein – Antara Winds: Let’s Dance!
Event summary
Featuring Antara Winds: Diane Smith, flute; Judith Ricker, oboe; Margaret (Peggy) Quackenbush, clarinet; Blaire Koerner, bassoon; and W. Peter Kurau, horn.

Founded in 1982, Antara Winds have appeared regularly on Live from Hochstein and have performed extensively throughout the Greater Rochester area including appearances with the Rochester Oratorio Society, Perinton Concert Band, and Society for Chamber Music in Rochester. 

This program features dance music representing different time periods and countries, including the charming Dance Suite by Eastman alum Paul Valjean – which Antara Winds recorded in 2008 – as well as selections from Bill Douglas’s rhythmic Suite Cantabile and Henri Tomasi’s exciting Cinq Danses (Profanes et Sacrées).

Antara Winds delights in bringing audiences the music of contemporary composers. They have premiered two works written specifically for Antara: Verne Reynolds’ Antara Music (2003) and Libby Larsen’s Blue Windows: After Marc Chagall (2005).

The Hochstein School’s free noontime Live from Hochstein concert series will be hosted by WXXI Classical’s Mona Seghatoleslami and broadcast live. Listen to the concert on WXXI Classical at 91.5 FM, 90.3 FM, or online at https://www.wxxiclassical.org. Listen to an encore broadcast on WXXI Classical 91.5 FM at 10:00 pm the day of the concert.

Please note that only bottled water is allowed in the newly renovated hall. PLEASE do not attend any activity at Hochstein if you are not feeling 100% healthy.

Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra Concert
Event summary
The Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra (HYSO), directed by Casey Springstead, performs its fall concert.

The Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra (HYSO) HYSO is an advanced youth orchestra comprised of grade 7-12 students from across the Rochester region. This concert will be sign-interpreted.

Live from Hochstein – Famous Melodies: A Piano Duo Celebration
Event summary
Featuring Elinor Freer & Doleen Hood, piano.
Event details

Two pianists become the orchestra in this program of famous melodies arranged for piano duo and duet. Featuring Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute, Mars from The Planets by Holst, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, and other well-known pieces audience members are sure to enjoy.

A native of Montana, pianist Elinor Freer has built a versatile career as soloist, chamber musician, teacher, and artistic administrator. She has performed throughout the US, Europe, Mexico, and China; her performances have aired on National Public Radio and on “Performance Today;” and she has recorded for Cedille Records. For 10 years, she and her husband, cellist David Ying, directed the Skaneateles Festival and garnered a CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. Freer currently serves as Associate Professor of Piano and Chamber Music at the Eastman School of Music.

A member of Hochstein’s piano faculty, Doleen Hood made her solo debut at age 16 with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra. A graduate of the D’Angelo School of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music, she has extensive professional work as a collaborative pianist and coach and has performed on recitals and concert series throughout the US and Europe. She has held faculty and staff positions at Nazareth College, MacPhail School, Crown College, and Bethel College. For many years she has been an active supporter of Hochstein’s Chamber Music Connection program, both as a coordinator and a coach, and she also serves as the faculty piano juror for the Hochstein Honors Certificate Program.

Event summary
