CALENDAR OF EVENTS
Hochstein Alumni Orchestra Concert
Event summary
More than 40 former Hochstein students return to present a free orchestral concert directed by Evan Meccarello and featuring music by Borodin and Skoryk.
Event details

Ukrainian composer Myrslav Skoryk’s Melody has become a celebrated emblem of his home country. The beautiful score has outgrown its film origin and is beloved for its sincere beauty.

Borodin’s Symphony No. 2 is a treasure trove of Romantic-era tunes, featuring a powerful, athletic first movement, followed by a laughing scherzo with a gorgeous slower midsection. The third movement is really special, a slowly unfolding tale with clarinet, harp, and French horn solos. The final movement is like attending a festival of dances in the old Russian countryside, with a brief stop by a monastery along the way.

Created in 2010 as a reunion of musicians with connections to Hochstein, the Hochstein Alumni Orchestra has reunited each year to present free, high-quality concerts. Members of the HAO have gone on to win international contests, have received mention by music critic Alex Ross in The New Yorker magazine, and earned opportunities to play in professional orchestras including the Detroit Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Buffalo Philharmonic, and Fort Worth Symphony.

The concert is free, with donations accepted to benefit Hochstein.

This concert will be livestreamed on Hochstein’s YouTube channel for those not able to attend the concert in person. Click here.

Spotlight on Faculty – World Serenade: An Evening of Musical Voyages
Event summary
Join us for a musical voyage that celebrates the universal beauty of music – including selections by Ravel, Beach, Bartók, Schubert, and more. Featuring E-Na Song, piano.
Event details

This journey crosses borders and speaks to the heart in ways that words cannot. Each piece pictures a unique reflection of each composer’s cultural origins and emotions, from the shimmering waters of French impressionism to the rhythm and passion of Latin American folk.

The program opens with the shimmering water portrait Ondine by Maurice Ravel, followed by rich and romantic music by American composer Amy Beach. The next destination is the Cuyo region in western Argentina with a simple but profound melody line and Latin American folk influences in Guastavino’s Romance de Cuyo.

Bartók’s Sonata captures the composer’s passion with Eastern European folk music through a rhythmic, dense, and percussive sound. Schubert’s Impromptu in G-flat Major, one of his most beloved pieces, presents much needed calmness and serenity before the festive and playful final piece, El Pelele by Granados with the joy of Spanish musical charm.

Admission at the door is $10 per person, with a $20 family maximum. Concerts are free to Hochstein students/families, faculty, and staff. The concert lasts about an hour, and is followed by a “meet the artists” reception.

Spotlight on Faculty – A Journey through Folk-Inspired Classics
Event summary
Featuring Koki Tanaka, violin, and E-Na Song, piano, performing music by Vaughan Williams, Bartók, Vieuxtemps, and Grieg.
Event details

Koki and E-Na have prepared a program that celebrates the rich collage of folk tradition that has inspired composers worldwide, offering a blend of lyrical expression, dance-like vitality, and virtuosic flair. The concert features composers who drew deeply from the rhythms, melodies, and spirit of their native folk traditions, weaving them into timeless classics.

The concert begins with Ralph Vaughan Williams' Six Studies in English Folksong, which reimagines English folk tunes with lyrical beauty and heartfelt simplicity. Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances will capture the essence of rural life through lively, rhythmic dances of Eastern Europe. Henri Vieuxtemps’ Souvenir d’Amérique is based on the popular American folk tune “Yankee Doodle.” The program closes with Edvard Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in C minor, a deeply passionate work infused with Norwegian folk elements.

Admission at the door is $10 per person, with a $20 family maximum. Concerts are free to Hochstein students/families, faculty, and staff. The concert lasts about an hour, and is followed by a “meet the artists” reception.
