Spring Concert of Young Voices (w/livestream)
Event summary
Young singers in Hochstein’s choral program will be featured in this free afternoon concert.
Event details

Maryellen Giese directs Hochstein Singers and Youth Singers with Jonathan Thomas Madden, Assistant Director and Composer in Residence, and Yasuko Kelly, Accompanist. Shana Kohler directs Hochstein Little Singers with Jamilya Arzanesh, Accompanist.

The program includes “Songs for the People,” written by Madden and set to a poem by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, one of the best-known Black poets of the 19th century.

You’ll also hear songs by Stevie Wonder, Michael Praetorius, César Franck, and Dave Brubeck; “This is Me” from “The Greatest Showman;” children’s nursery rhymes set to music; “Song for the Mira” from Cape Breton; a Romani dance; an African-American spiritual; and two songs by Irving Berlin, performed by the combined ensembles.

Chamber Music Connection End-of-Year Concert - 2:00 pm
Event summary
Students in Hochstein’s Chamber Music Connection (CMC) program perform their end-of-year concerts.

The CMC Program offers fun and challenging opportunities to learn the art of chamber music and connect with other musicians. Small groups of students work on chamber repertoire with a coach each week throughout the school year. The concert is free.

Spring Dance Showcase
Event summary
Students take the stage in this free evening performance celebrating Hochstein’s unique and diverse dance department.
Event details

This dance showcase will feature students from Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz Dance, and African Dance & Drumming classes, as well as solo dancers.

At Hochstein, the emphasis is on the educational experience and the joy of dance, led by teachers who are experts in their particular style of dance.

Hochstein at High Falls: Watkins & the Rapiers
Event summary
Join us for a free lunchtime concert at Hochstein at High Falls, featuring Watkins & the Rapiers.
Event details

Location: Outer parking lot at 4 Commercial Street, corner of Browns Race. Click here for a map

Please note that this is an alternate location for this summer, due to ongoing construction on the Pont de Rennes.

The concerts are hosted by Ryan Yarmel of The Route/WRUR 88.5. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating and lunch. Each performance will run approximately 40 minutes. 

Watkins & the Rapiers play an eclectic mix of acoustic music incorporating echoes of Cajun, country, jug band music, reggae, soul, and swing. The band’s repertoire includes more than 60 quirky original songs written by band members, as well as covers of songs by artists as diverse as The Band, Travelling Wilburys, Steve Earle, and Colorblind James, among others. The band has been rocking out in the Greater Rochester area since January 1996, when the band was formed on a lark to fill an empty performance slot at the Rose & Crown Pub. The band includes Scott Regan, Kerry Regan, Tom Whitmore, Marty York, Steve Piper, and Rick McRae. https://watkinsandtherapiers.com

Concerts take place rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, check Hochstein’s website or Hochstein’s Facebook page at 10:30 am the day of the concert to see if the concert is moving to the rain location at MCC’s Downtown Campus at 321 State Street. HochStrings Spring Concert
Event summary
The HochStrings Adult Chamber Orchestra, directed by Pia Liptak, performs a free concert of string music.
Event details

The concert includes folk music from around the globe – China, England, United States (bluegrass), Iceland – as well as local music with “Meditation” by Nancy Strelau. There’s also “Eine Kleine Lachmusik” (“A Little Laugh Music”), which includes some unexpected surprises set to the music of Mozart.

Vocalist Debbie Kendrick is Rochester’s Queen of the Blues, carrying on a tradition of many great blues and gospel artists that goes back to the legendary Son House. Her group has an acoustic vibe and its influences harkens back to the early days of blues, gospel, folk, and jazz music. The Debbie Kendrick Project includes drummer Pete Monacelli, a veteran of the local jazz scene; bassist Mike Patric, who also accompanies the legendary Joe Beard; guitarist Aleks Disljenkovic, whose acoustic fingerstyle guitar provides a solid rhythmic background for Debbie’s powerful vocal melodies; and vocalist Ann Culbreth. Kendrick inspires audiences across New York and Canada with her improvisational performances, laughing with the band and chatting with the crowd.

Event summary
Join us for a free lunchtime concert at Hochstein at High Falls, featuring John Dady & Benny Bleu.

John Dady – one half of the Rochester Music Hall of Fame inductees The Dady Brothers – brings his unique blend of Irish and American folk music back to Hochstein at High Falls. Joining him for this concert will be Benny Bleu, an award-winning banjo player, songwriter, and singer who is also a member of The Brothers Blue. John and Benny have been friends and musical kin for years. Both are songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, so you can expect lots of spontaneous moments of musical magic.

Bagpipes - Jake KwiatkowskiCome early (11:50 am) to hear bagpipe music by Jake Kwiatkowski, a bagpipe instructor at Hochstein. Jake has traveled the United States, Canada, and Scotland to compete, perform, and educate. He was a founding member of the Feadan Or Pipe Band in Rochester before competing with the world championship-winning 78th Fraser Highlanders in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
