Live from Hochstein – A Trio of Trios
Event summary
Featuring Tony Caramia, piano; Annette Farrington, flute; and Elise Cole, cello, performing music of Marion Bauer, Amy Beach, and Bohuslav Martinů.
Event details

Eastman piano professor Tony Caramia is joined by flutist Annette Farrington and cellist Elise Cole for a concert featuring three trios for flute, cello, and piano from the first half of the 20th century.

One of the most successful American composers of her era, Amy Beach wrote her Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano during her first visit to the MacDowell Colony in NH. Composer, teacher, and music critic Marion Bauer’s Trio Sonata is alternately impressionistic, heartfelt, and gleeful. Martinů’s Trio was written in a holiday spirit while on a retreat in the Connecticut countryside, although the folk-music rhythms reveal the composer’s underlying homesickness.

Live from Hochstein – American Soundscapes: Music for Cello, Trumpet, and Piano
Event summary
Featuring Cora Swenson Lee, cello; Apollo Lee, trumpet; Yoshiko Arahata, piano, performing music as vast and varied as the American landscape.
Event details

“American Soundscapes” is an exploration of the widely varied musical languages employed by American composers through repertoire written for cello, piano, and trumpet.

The program includes pieces in a late Romantic style by Amy Beach; those which explore timbre and tonality such as the Sonata for Trumpet and Cello by Yves Chardon; music for the unusual trio of trumpet, cello, and piano by both Eric Ewasen and Carson Cooman; Joseph Turrin's energetic "Intrada" for trumpet and piano; and a selection from Ned Rorem's Piano Sonata No. 1.

Cora Swensen Lee and Apollo Lee are both former Hochstein faculty members and Eastman alums with extensive chamber and orchestral experience, now based in central Illinois. A member of Hochstein’s piano faculty, Yoshiko Arahata enjoys a multifaceted career as an internationally active pianist, educator, improvisor, and composer.

The musical soundscapes the program traverses are as vast and varied as the American landscape, and we hope the audience will enjoy this journey.

Spotlight on Faculty – Celtic-Classical Connection
Event summary
This concert explores the connection between classical music and Celtic music with works by the Italian guitar virtuoso Mauro Giuliani; the Irish harpist, singer, and composer Turlough O’Carolan; and influential Italian violinist Niccolò Paganini.
Event details

Featuring Shannon Nance, violin; Kathleen Murphy Kemp, cello; and Tim Shannon, guitar.

Giuiliani’s Serenade and Paganini’s Terzetto – both written for a trio of violin, cello, and guitar – bookend the program and represent the purely classical repertoire.

“My Lodging is on the Cold Ground” (more widely known as “Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms”) is a solo guitar piece that represents a true marriage of Celtic and classical styles. The main theme is a traditional Irish melody with variations by Giuliani.

Though O’Carolan mostly wrote jigs and reels and other traditional Irish dance music, he wrote his concerto in the style of Corelli, an Italian Baroque composer whose music was popular in Ireland at the time. O’Carolan’s “Farewell to Music” was written in a more traditional Irish style.
