Youth Wind Symphony Concert
Event summary
The Hochstein Youth Wind Symphony, directed by John Rolland, presents a winter concert of wind band music.
Event details

Hochstein’s Youth Wind Symphony features wind, percussion, and brass players in grades 9–12. The ensemble meets for six weeks in January and February to prepare music for this concert. 

The program includes “Havendance” by David Holsinger, written for his daughter; “Impressions” by Julie Giroux, a musical synopsis of the life and loves of a single person; Aaron Copland’s “Down a Country Lane,” originally written for piano but later arranged for wind band; “Shattering Infinity,” a musical depiction of fractal art by Benjamin Taylor; and “Amparito Roca,” one of the most famous Spanish marches, by Jamie Texidor.

HYSO & Philharmonia in Concert
Event summary
Musicians from the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra, directed by Casey Springstead, and Hochstein Philharmonia Orchestra, directed by John Fetter and Matt Osika, perform a joint concert.

In the first half, HPO plays Verdi’s rousing Overture to Nabucco, selections from Grieg’s Peer Gynt, and music from the award-winning score to Peter Jackson’s 2001 film Lord of the Rings:  The Fellowship of the Ring

Then the HYSO performs Smetana’s Three Dances from The Bartered Bride, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2, and selections from John Williams’ music for Superman and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Hochstein Concerto Competition winner Joanna Frank is featured in Bruch’s Kol Nidrei for cello and orchestra. HYSO member Amy Feng is Conductor Apprentice for this concert. 

Tickets at the door: $5 general admission.

RPO OrKIDStra: Pirates! The Quest for Blackbeard’s Treasure
Event summary
All hands on deck for this family concert by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Enrico Lopez-Yañez, conductor. Rescheduled from January 23.

All hands on deck! When Captain Enrico and First Mate Pip discover a clue to the lost treasure of Captain Blackbeard, they recruit the audience of new sailors to sail the seven seas in search of this legendary prize.

Doors open at 1:30 pm. No pre-concert kids' activities (take-home bags provided).

Tickets: Adults $20, Kids $10
