Rochester Gay Men’s Chorus - Fa La La La La - Saturday
Event summary
With all the folderol in our world it is definitely a time for some holiday jocularity. Nothing makes your holidays brighter than a holiday concert by RGMC, this year celebrating its 40th concert season.
Event details

Join the chorus as it performs holiday favorites such as "Sleigh Ride," "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," "You’re a Mean One, Mister Grinch," "Hallelujah Chorus," and many others. Of course, the Rochettes and the Teddy Bears will be joining in the festivities. And there may even be a special guest or two.

Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Live from Hochstein – Madrigalia: A Cup of Good Cheer

Our annual celebration of the holiday season with the choral chamber ensemble Madrigalia; Cary Ratcliff, artistic director.

Madrigalia’s expansive interpretation of the December holidays includes Christmas music from Scotland, Haiti, and Appalachia; meditations on winter; and music for Chanukah.

Since 1975, Madrigalia has distinguished itself as one of the finest chamber choirs in all of Rochester and western New York. The ensemble is known for its quality performances of unique repertoire spanning over six centuries. Cary Ratcliff was appointed Madrigalia’s Artistic Director in 2014, and since that time the group has produced two recordings, collaborated with local and international artists, and premiered new works.

The Hochstein School’s free noontime Live from Hochstein concert series will be hosted by WXXI Classical’s Mona Seghatoleslami and broadcast live on WXXI Classical. Listen to the concert at WXXI-FM 91.5, WXXY 90.3, or online at https://www.wxxiclassical.org. Listen to an encore broadcast on WXXI Classical 91.5 FM at 10:00 pm the day of the concert.

* Masks and vaccination are encouraged but not required. Please note that only bottled water is allowed in the newly renovated hall.

Sidney and Barbara Sobel have generously provided continuous underwriting of the Live from Hochstein Broadcast & Concert Series since 1993. 

Live from Hochstein is also made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature.

Hochstein Ensembles Holiday Concert
Event summary
Hochstein ensembles perform a free holiday concert in the Performance Hall.
Event details

This concert will be in the Prism format with performers set up in different parts of the Performance Hall. The concert runs continuously for about an hour.

The ensembles include HochStrings Adult Chamber Orchestra; clarinet, trombone, and flute choirs; a brass quintet; string ensembles; piano trios; guitar ensemble; and a jazz combo.

Holiday Concert of Young Voices
Event summary
Young singers in Hochstein’s choral program perform this free afternoon concert featuring a mixture of musical styles.
Event details

Hochstein Singers and Youth Singers, directed by Maryellen Giese and Jonathan Thomas Madden, perform a seasonal program including festive songs like “Little Saint Nick” and “Jingle Bell Rock,” Irish and Spanish folk songs, Bach’s “Bist du bei mir,” as well as a song by Meghan Trainor for the soundtrack to the film The Peanuts Movie.

The Hochstein Little Singers, directed by Shana Kohler, explore music about winter, snow, stars, and the moon.

At the end of the concert, the Youth Singers are joined by parents, friends, Hochstein faculty, and members of the Rochester Oratorio Society for the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah. There is also one song with special guests from the Submarine School of Music.

Bureau Cats Blues Band: Annual Holiday Blues Extravaganza
Event summary
A special holiday concert with cash donations accepted at the show, proceeds to benefit Hochstein’s Tuition Assistance Program.

The Bureau Cats Blues Band has been on the prowl for nearly 10 years, playing festivals, community events, and fundraisers. A collaboration between community-minded musicians, the Bureau Cats simply love to cut through the red tape and be part of a good time. The band’s diverse musical influences offer a preference towards get-down beats, creative licks, and familiar tunes from the blues and R&B genres.

The band features Diane Watkins, lead vocals; Eric Logan, keyboards/vocals; John DeMott, bass; David Balestiere, drums; John Nutter, guitar; and Rick Rynski, guitar. A couple of Hochstein alums will be sitting in with the group, with other surprise guests. 

Come out to enjoy some great music and support Hochstein!

ROCmusic Concert
Event summary
Students in ROCmusic's strings, brass, guitar, and rhythm section programs perform.
Event details

ROCmusic offers tuition-free classical music instruction and instrument lessons to students in grades 1-12 who reside in the city of Rochester, NY. The program is a partnership between The Hochstein School, Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester), Eastman Community Music School, Gateways Music Festival, City of Rochester, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Rochester City School District.
