Live from Hochstein – Ekstasis Duo: Slavic Masters
Event summary
Featuring the Ekstasis Duo: Natasha Farny, cello, and Eliran Avni, piano.
Event details

Ekstasis celebrates Rachmaninoff’s 150th birth year with the third movement of his grand cello and piano sonata, op. 19. Rachmaninoff is known for his piano concerti and in this masterful work, we hear orchestral writing on a smaller scale, displaying multiple emotions from quiet desperation to a great revelation of love and joy. The program also includes movements from the stirring and epic Sonata by Croatian late-Romantic composer Dora Pejačević; Ritournelle by the great female Czech composer Vítězslava Kaprálová, full of scampering mischief; and Prokofiev’s early work, Ballade, which reveals intensely dark and mysterious characters.

The Ekstasis Duo performs music for cello and piano and their mission is to create compelling programming celebrating masterpieces alongside the secret jewels of lesser-known works. With a focus on storytelling that pinpoints an aspect of the human condition or creates an atmosphere through sound, their concerts offer solo and chamber music works.

Since their debut in 2018, The Ekstasis Duo has appeared on distinguished series such as New York City’s Merkin Hall and Eastman’s Morning Chamber Music Series. The duo produced their first CD, “Women’s Voices,” in fall 2021. They are currently in the finishing stages of a second CD, “… From the Shadows,” to be released in fall 2023.

Spotlight on Faculty – Plymouth Brass: Hidden Voices
Event summary
Featuring Hochstein’s Plymouth Brass Quintet performing music by Black composers.
Event details

In honor of Black History Month, which ends today, Plymouth Brass presents a program of music by Black composers, including Florence Price, Robert Nathaniel Dett, Kevin Day, and Katahj Copley, among others.

The group chose to focus on music that is all new to them, by underrepresented composers, to draw attention to their contributions in the same way that the film “Hidden Figures” told the previously unknown story of the contributions of Black Women mathematicians at NASA. They want to inspire and educate the audience about these important but often “hidden” voices of composition.

Featuring Matt Osika and Roy Smith, trumpets; Colleen Wolf, horn; Ben David Aronson, trombone; and Jeremy Stoner, tuba.

Admission at the door is $10 per person, with a $20 family maximum. Concerts are free to Hochstein students/families, faculty, and staff. The concert lasts about an hour, and is followed by a “meet the artists” reception.

Spotlight on Faculty – Spanish Guitar
Event summary
Featuring Tim Shannon and Shiuen-Huang Suen, guitars, performing works by Fernando Sor, Moreno Torroba, Enrique Granados, Isaac Albéniz, and Manuel de Falla.
Event details

“Nothing is more beautiful than a guitar, save perhaps two,” wrote Frédéric Chopin. Enjoy an evening of Spanish guitar music featuring Hochstein guitar faculty members Tim Shannon and Shiuen-Huang Suen performing both solo and duo arrangements for the instrument.

The 19th-century critic Fetis called Fernando Sor “the Beethoven of the guitar” for his contribution to the literature and expressiveness of the instrument in the opening decades of the century. First published in Paris in 1828, Sor’s L’Encouragement, Op. 34 for two guitars, was dedicated to one of his students. It consists of a cantabile, a theme and variations, and a waltz.

When it comes to Spanish composers of the late 19th and early 20th century, the three most important names are Albéniz, Granados, and Manuel de Falla. Their music is vividly evocative of Spain and these transcriptions for guitar are so well written that the listener will believe the music was originally written for the guitar.

Admission at the door is $10 per person, with a $20 family maximum. Concerts are free to Hochstein students/families, faculty, and staff. The concert lasts about an hour, and is followed by a “meet the artists” reception.

As an organization that deeply values diversity, The Hochstein School stands in solidarity with all marginalized communities who are targeted with microaggressions of hate and with violence. We denounce any injustices perpetrated towards them. We are committed to speaking out against all forms of racism and bigotry and will continue our work in bringing unity and inclusiveness to all - at Hochstein and throughout our community.

The Hochstein School, founded in commemoration of genius and dedicated to providing access to opportunity, is a vibrant community of musicians, dancers, and supporters who choose to come together in this historic and inspiring place to develop in themselves, and in each other, the ability to speak and communicate through the making of music and dance. We do this with the conviction that music nurtures, enriches, and energizes every human life, and that the joy of making music, and all the expressive arts that it inspires, holds the key to creating a better world.
