Prior to joining the RPO, Browning was Principal Harp with the Dallas Opera and Harp Fellow with the New World Symphony where she worked closely with Michael Tilson Thomas. Music of Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Ratcliff
Event summary
Pianist Cary Ratcliff – with guest Robert Simonds on violin – performs music of Chopin and Rachmaninoff, along with his own compositions. The concert will be broadcast on WXXI Classical 91.5/90.3 FM (no live audience).
Event details

Pianist Cary Ratcliff – with guest Robert Simonds on violin – performs music of Chopin and Rachmaninoff, along with his own compositions. Known as a composer of choral, orchestral, chamber music, art song, and opera, Ratcliff also is keyboardist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Madrigalia chamber choir. Robert Simonds is Principal Second Violin with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ratcliff’s newly penned overture on his early opera “Ellis Island” is set during the second great wave of immigration, as the United States opened its doors to Southern and Eastern Europeans around the beginning of the 19th century. His opera is influenced by the music of many cultures.

The program includes works by Chopin and Rachmaninov, composers who were extraordinary pianists. Their work opened up beautiful new ways of writing for the instrument.

The final portion of the program recognizes the losses that many have experienced this past year. The bittersweetness of Chopin Nocturnes, and a new solo by Ratcliff entitled “Goodbye,” offer some consolation.

The Hochstein School’s lunchtime Live from Hochstein concert series will be broadcast on WXXI Classical 91.5/90.3 FM and hosted by WXXI Classical 91.5’s Mona Seghatoleslami.

Live from Hochstein – A Trio of Trios: Music of Debussy, Mozart, and Piazzolla
Event summary
Violinist YooJin Jang, cellist Mimi Hwang, and pianist Elinor Freer in a concert broadcast on WXXI Classical 91.5/90.3 FM (no live audience).
Event details

Violinist YooJin Jang, cellist Mimi Hwang, and pianist Elinor Freer join forces for a program featuring a mature work by Mozart, the Piano Trio in C Major, K. 548, contrasted with a very youthful work by Claude Debussy, the first movement of his Piano Trio in G Major, written when he was just 18 years old. Complementing those two works will be the evocative “Spring” from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Astor Piazzolla.

Applauded by The Strad for her “fiery virtuosity” and “consummate performances,” violinist YooJin Jang is a winner of the 2017 Concert Artists Guild Competition and First Prize winner of the 2016 Sendai International Music Competition. She has a busy itinerary of international recital and concerto engagements – and two new recordings – and is currently assistant professor of violin at the Eastman School of Music.

Mimi Hwang, cello, was a founding member of the Franciscan String Quartet, First Prize winner of the Banff International String Quartet Competition, and top prizewinner of the Evian International String Quartet Competition. She has performed with the Tokyo, Ying, Colorado, and Ciompi quartets as well as with the Peabody Trio, Raphael Hillyer, Laurence Lesser, and Michael Tree. Currently, Mimi serves on the chamber music faculty at the Eastman School of Music.

Pianist Elinor Freer has performed as soloist and chamber musician across the United States, Europe, Mexico, and China. A prizewinner in the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition and the American Pianists Association Auditions, she has been the recipient of numerous awards. She currently serves as on the chamber music faculty at the Eastman School of Music.
