Event details

Pianist Cary Ratcliff – with guest Robert Simonds on violin – performs music of Chopin and Rachmaninoff, along with his own compositions. Known as a composer of choral, orchestral, chamber music, art song, and opera, Ratcliff also is keyboardist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Madrigalia chamber choir. Robert Simonds is Principal Second Violin with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ratcliff’s newly penned overture on his early opera “Ellis Island” is set during the second great wave of immigration, as the United States opened its doors to Southern and Eastern Europeans around the beginning of the 19th century. His opera is influenced by the music of many cultures.

The program includes works by Chopin and Rachmaninov, composers who were extraordinary pianists. Their work opened up beautiful new ways of writing for the instrument.

The final portion of the program recognizes the losses that many have experienced this past year. The bittersweetness of Chopin Nocturnes, and a new solo by Ratcliff entitled “Goodbye,” offer some consolation.

The Hochstein School’s lunchtime Live from Hochstein concert series will be broadcast on WXXI Classical 91.5/90.3 FM and hosted by WXXI Classical 91.5’s Mona Seghatoleslami.

Please note that because of health and safety guidelines during the pandemic, the spring concert series will be broadcast without a live audience in the Performance Hall.

Sidney and Barbara Sobel have provided continuous underwriting of the Live from Hochstein Broadcast & Concert Series since 1993. Live from Hochstein is also made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
