Live from Hochstein – Rosa Boemia plays Brazilian Choro
Event summary
Rosa Boemia plays the fast-paced, joyous, and virtuosic style of Brazilian music known as choro.
Event details

The trio Rosa Boemia presents a program of Brazilian choro music that features works by composers such as Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, and Waldyr Azevedo, among others. Translated as “Bohemian Rose,” Rosa Boemia features Ken Luk on bandolim (a Brazilian mandolin), Bernardo Marcondes Rodrigues on guitar, and Darien Lamen on pandeiro (a Brazilian hand drum).

Choro (pronounced SHOH-roh) is an instrumental Brazilian popular music genre – the precursor to samba and bossa nova – that originated in Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th century. The music blends African rhythms and European harmonies and form, with opportunities for improvisation. Many choro tunes are fast-paced, joyous, and virtuosic.

Rosa Boemia was formed in 2019 and has performed at Alfred University, Little Theatre Cafe, Bop Shop Records, Rochester Fringe Festival, and Eastman’s summer concert series.

Live from Hochstein – The Browning-Krug Duo
Event summary
RPO musicians Grace Browning (harp) and Benjamin Krug (cello) perform selections from opera scores to popular music and everything in between.
Event details

Recently engaged RPO musicians Grace Browning (harp) and Benjamin Krug (cello) return to the beautiful Hochstein stage for their debut performance together on the radio waves. When the pandemic began, Browning and Krug began making music in their living room, playing concerts over Zoom, in backyards, and at vaccination centers. Missing the sounds of their beloved orchestra, they began transcribing everything they could get their hands on – from opera scores to popular music and everything in between – and discovered a new world of musical possibilities.

The program for this concert includes a set of works by the French composers Fauré, Saint-Saëns, and Debussy; "Meditation" from Massanet's opera Thaïs; William Grant Still's "Bayou Home;" "Pas de Deux" ("Steps for Two," appropriately) from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker; and "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen, among other works.

Read the online program notes.

Praised for his “directness of expression” (Rochester City Newspaper), Benjamin Krug is a tenured cellist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Suzuki cello instructor at The Hochstein School.  In recent summers, he has performed with the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, Chautauqua Festival Orchestra, and Finger Lakes Opera.

Appearing for the third time on WXXI's Live from Hochstein in the past year, Grace Browning has quickly established herself as a versatile ensemble harpist, dynamic soloist, and community-building teaching artist. Equally at home with both symphonic and operatic worlds, Grace joined the RPO as Principal Harpist in 2017 and performs with the Santa Fe Opera every summer since her appointment in 2015. She can be heard on both ensemble’s GRAMMY award-winning albums: The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs and American Rapture.

The Hochstein School’s free noontime Live from Hochstein concert series will be hosted by WXXI Classical’s Mona Seghatoleslami and broadcast live on WXXI Classical. Listen to the concert at WXXI-FM 91.5, WXXY 90.3, or online at https://www.classical915.org/.

Live from Hochstein – Ekstasis Duo: From the Shadows
Event summary
Natasha Farny, cello, and Eliran Avni, piano, perform music by Alma Mahler, Lili Boulanger, George Walker, and more.
Event details

The Ekstasis Duo – featuring Natasha Farny, cello, and Eliran Avni, piano – is thrilled to return to Live from Hochstein. Their new program features luscious Romantic Viennese music from a student/teacher pairing, Alexander Zemlinsky and Alma Mahler; a dynamic sonata movement by George Walker (the first African American composer to win a Pulitzer); a charming nocturne by Lili Boulanger (the first woman to win the Rome Prize); and a blockbuster sonata by Dutch composer Henriette Bosmans. These compositions fell into obscurity, but since they are grand slam works, they may soon become your favorites.

Read the online program notes.

The Ekstasis Duo performs music for cello and piano and their mission is to create compelling programming celebrating masterpieces alongside the secret jewels of lesser-known works. With a focus on storytelling that pinpoints an aspect of the human condition or creates an atmosphere through sound, their concerts offer solo and chamber music works, and occasionally incorporate multimedia, readings, video, and visual art.

Since their debut in 2018, The Ekstasis Duo has appeared on distinguished series such as New York City’s Merkin Hall and Eastman’s Morning Chamber Music Series. During the summer of 2020, the duo recorded music for their upcoming debut CD, Women’s Voices, projected for release in 2021.

HochStrings Fall Concert
Event summary
The HochStrings Adult Chamber Orchestra, directed by Pia Liptak, performs their fall concert, with a theme of “the joy of being back to playing together in person.”
Event details

Please note that masks will be required at Hochstein for all persons age 2 and older, regardless of vaccination status. Distancing is encouraged.

HochStrings stayed together during the pandemic year since March 2020 when teaching went online – basically on the day of the group’s last planned concert, which did not take place. The group is still here and is stronger than ever both in playing and in friendship.

The program is varied and chosen from the pieces learned during the pandemic online sessions. Randy Newman’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story underscores the group’s strong bonding both during the last year and as we meet again “live.”

“Agincourt” by Doug Spata has exciting rhythmic patterns that are so much more fun to work on together rather than to follow with a recording playing online.

In Haydn’s String Quartet, No. 3, “The Bird,” HochStrings is working on the refinement of the Classical style and coordination of sound. It is precious being together and having the ability to listen to each other and invaluable to work on creating a unified ensemble sound.

“The Wellerman” is a New Zealand whale-hunting song from the 1800s that became very popular on TicToc last year.

Mendelssohn’s well-known Nocturne from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, originally a beautiful solo for horn, evokes the magic slumber of the lovers in the moonlit forest.

This program reflects the palette of joy that is and embodies HochStrings: from the serious work with the music to the fun and happy enjoyment and the deep care, interest, and compassion everyone shows for one another.
