From winter’s blue cold, to Indonesia and Norway, and Iceland to South America, this collection of pieces draws inspiration from places near and far.
The program includes Awake by Patrick Burke, inspired by Javanese gamelan; Öldurót (Ocean Waves) by Icelandic composer and multi-instrumentalist Olafur Arnalds; Moon Currents by Diego Garcia, inspired by tango; Dreams of Glass and Water by Norwegian composer Kari Telstad Sundet; and Pale as Centuries, music that conjures winter by Sarah Kirkland Snider.

Described as “classical turned loose in the toy store” (Jeff Spevak, WXXI-FM), fivebyfive is an artist-led Rochester, NY-based ensemble formed in 2015 with a mission to engage audiences in the collaborative spirit and creativity of today’s chamber music. The ensemble has appeared nationally on American Public Media’s Performance Today with host Fred Child, on WXXI Classical 91.5’s programs Backstage Pass and Live from Hochstein, and Fresh Ink on WCNY, among other programs. Their name comes from a two-way radio term meaning to be heard loud and clear.
The Hochstein School’s free noontime Live from Hochstein concert series will be hosted by WXXI Classical’s Mona Seghatoleslami and broadcast live on WXXI Classical. Listen to the concert at WXXI-FM 91.5, WXXY 90.3, or online at https://www.wxxiclassical.org. Listen to an encore broadcast on WXXI Classical 91.5 FM at 10:00 pm the day of the concert.
