ROC Dances!

Weekly Dance Classes from October 2024-June 2025
Fridays from 6:30-7:30 pm in Dance Studio 1
Free & open to the public (ages 7+)

 
The Hochstein School is thrilled to announce our weekly free community dance class series, ROC Dances! Taught by local dance professionals, classes will begin in October 2024 and run through June 2025 (see schedule below). All classes are free and open to anyone who is interested (ages 7+).
 
Featured dance styles include Soca, Jamaican Social, Krump, Salsa Rueda, Flow Arts, Capoeira, Contemporary Hip-Hop, and Samba. Each month, participants will learn about a different dance genre.
 
We invite you to join us as we celebrate multiple forms of dance and their rich history, all while building community. Let’s move together, Rochester!
 
Register today to secure your spot! Each weekly class is limited to 25 spots. Walk-ins welcome if space allows. Suggested attire includes comfortable clothing but most importantly, just be you!

Soca Dance

Soca is a dance fusion of Modern, African and Caribbean styles. The class will incorporate fluid movements and rhythms where you will always feel the music move with passion and engage in a fun community atmosphere.

Afro-Caribbean Dance 

Let’s get into the vibes of the Caribbean! Enjoy a movement class introducing the traditional folk and contemporary dances of Jamaica and the Caribbean. Be prepared to engage your mind, body, and soul. All levels welcome. Attire is bare feet and comfortable clothing.

Krump Dance

The urban street dance Krump is characterized by free, expressive, exaggerated, and highly energetic movement. Students will learn the history, the fundamentals of Krump, which consists of four main basics – Stomps, Arms, Chestpops, and Grooves – and terminology such as battles, sessions, call-outs, get-off, kill-off, material, combos, and hype.

Casino Salsa Rueda

Salsa Rueda, a Cuban Salsa dance born around the 1950s, is a dance form done in a circle with multiple partners. Similarly to square dancing, this dance form will utilize a caller (cantante) who will call out the steps. This class aims to bring students together through Salsa Rueda to engage with each other and create environments for connection.

Flow Arts

In this series, you’ll learn basic hoop dance skills to help expand your understanding of how to interact with a hula hoop as a dance prop. Find success hooping on your waist using an appropriately sized hula hoop. Gain insight on how to structure your continued practice to reduce frustration and build confidence while practicing new skills

Capoeira

This class is rooted and inspired by the artform of Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian dance and martial art. Participants will learn fundamental movements, an introduction of its history, and the ways in which Capoeira is expressed through community and individually. This class will explore circular and inverted movements, rhythmic connections, and interpersonal play and physical conversation.

Contemporary Hip Hop

Explore hip hop dance and its cultural and artistic connectivity to the world around us. This class is an opportunity to delve deeper and expand how we utilize, think about, and describe movement. The goal is to find the connection between hip hop dance and “concert dance” and to find the “concert dance” in hip hop.

Samba

Samba is a lively, rhythmical dance characterized by its rapid footwork and vibrant movements. Often performed to upbeat music, samba can be danced solo or in pairs, showcasing energetic and joyful expressions of celebration and community.
