Level Requirements:
Strings – NYSSMA Level 5 and higher
Winds – NYSSMA Level 4 and higher
Percussion – NYSSMA Level 5 and higher (needs to have a chromatic mallet instrument)              

NOTE: This class is being offered virtually. The first class meeting will include a 30-minute sound check.

Not your average music making experience! Play music live in an online ensemble – and hear sound from some of the musicians playing with you – as we explore new music of our time. The ensemble will perform Dai Fujikura’s “Longing from Afar,” a piece written to embrace online limitations in a creative way. Hear the results of our group effort and improvement week-to-week through recordings from our session.

In addition to work on the Fujikura piece (link to one performance of the work is listed below), students will engage in using text scores as exercises in listening and improvisation (including composers such as Pauline Oliveros and Karlheinz Stockhausen). Participants will need:
- An internet connection
- 2 Electronic Devices:
   (1) Computer to run free Zoom video chat software
   (2) A separate Sound Recording device (a smartphone is fine)
- Wired Headphones to use with Zoom    

FEE: $49*; $39 if enrolled in individual lessons at Hochstein. (Fees are as of Winter 2021.)
