 New York State Ballet presents Gershwin and Gatsby
Event summary
This lively, vibrant ballet is set to George Gershwin's classic music from an era steeped in champagne and jazz.

Join in the splendor and decadence of the Roaring 20's with "Gershwin Songs and a Gatsby Ball"! The New York State Ballet is accompanied by Music Director Jared Chase, who leads a jazz band and vocalists through the saucy turn-of-the-century pieces that set this production on fire. So break out your red lipstick and best kitten heels, brush up on your Charleston, and join the New York State Ballet, Gatsby, and Daisy for a night to remember!

Sinfonia & Concertino Strings in Concert
Event summary
Musicians in Hochstein’s Sinfonia (grades 4-9, John Fetter, director; Matt Osika, Assistant Director), and Concertino Strings (grades 1-5, Marcos Kreutzer, director) orchestral ensembles give a free joint afternoon concert.

Sinfonia performs selections from “Abdelazer” by the 17th-century composer Henry Purcell – including one movement that was the theme for Benjamin Britten’s variations in “The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra” and also appears in TV shows and movies. Richard Meyer’s “Acrobats” is a musical tour-de-force for string orchestra – a musical impression of a circus full of jugglers, gymnasts, and acrobats. 

Concertino Strings performs Coronation March by Elliot A. del Borgo, Robert S. Frost's "El Sombrero," and Plunkin' Peter by Floyd Barnard.

This concert is free and open to the public.

Paula Poundstone
Event summary
With smart, observational humor and a legendary spontaneous interaction with the crowd, Paula Poundstone is one of our country's pre-eminent comedians.
Event details

Paula Poundstone improvises with a crowd like a jazz musician, swinging in unexpected directions without a plan, without a net. There's a disarming ease in her craft, an immediate sense that she's so quick on her feet you need never worry about the possibility of something going wrong.

Poundstone is recognized on Comedy Central's list of The 100 Best Standup Comics of All Time. She is a regular panelist on NPR's #1 show, the weekly comedy news quiz "Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me!" She won an American Comedy Award for Best Female Standup Comic, and she is included in innumerable lists, documentaries, and literary compendiums noting influential standup comedians of our time.

Golden Link presents An Evening with Judy Collins
Event summary
This special Golden Link concert features Judy Collins, who has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism.

In the 1960s, Judy Collins evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” is in the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Founded in 1971, the Golden Link Folk Singing Society is dedicated to presenting, promoting, and preserving folk music in the Rochester area.

Live from Hochstein – Ekstasis Duo

Hosted by WXXI Classical 91.5’s Mona Seghatoleslami and broadcast live on WXXI Classical 91.5/ 90.3 FM, Live from Hochstein is the longest-running live broadcast concert series in Western New York. 

This free weekly "brown-bag" concert series gives downtown business people, teachers, families, students, and friends an opportunity to enjoy classical music by outstanding musicians, including soloists, duets, and small ensembles.

Sidney and Barbara Sobel have provided continuous underwriting of the Live from Hochstein Broadcast & Concert Series since 1993.

Live from Hochstein is also made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Voices of Spring Recital
Event summary
This free concert features young singers in Hochstein’s choral program—Hochstein Singers and Youth Singers, directed by Maryellen Giese, and the Hochstein Little Singers, directed by Grace Adams.

Joining them on stage will be individual voice students as well as special guests Sweden Senior Singers, a 60-member chorus from the Brockport area also directed by Maryellen Giese.

The program includes music from Brazil, Cape Breton, Italy, and South Africa and “Make Them Hear You” from the musical Ragtime.

The concert is free and open to the public.

HochStrings: Haydn’s Farewell Symphony
Event summary
The winter concert of the HochStrings Adult Chamber Orchestra, directed by Pia Liptak, features Haydn’s Symphony No. 45, known as the “Farewell” Symphony, arranged just for strings.

Legend has it that Haydn composed this piece to convince his patron, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, that it was time to leave the summer palace and return home so his musicians could see their families. The concert is free and open to the public.

Musical Mystery Tour! (NEW DATE)
Event summary
Hochstein is delighted to invite families to our annual winter open house! (The original January 20 event was cancelled due to a snowstorm.) Enjoy an afternoon filled with fun at our Musical Mystery Tour.

Highlights include:

  • an instrument petting zoo, where kids can try out individual instruments with guidance from Hochstein's expert faculty;
  • interactive music and dance sessions;
  • crafts and Music and Art Therapy activities;
  • face painting;
  • performances by Hochstein ensembles;
  • and a huge drum circle!

The Musical Mystery Tour sends children on a scavenger hunt for dance and music clues scattered throughout the historic Hochstein building, while the exceptional Hochstein faculty guide young gumshoes through the music, dance, and craft activities. Families can explore our offerings, learn more about the school, and even register for individual lessons and summer camps.

Tickets: Pricing for the Musical Mystery tour is $3 per child, $5 per adult, and a maximum of $10 per family. Children 2 and under are admitted free of charge.

Finger Lakes Concert Band: Winter Concert - Viva Roma!

Under the direction of Gregory Kane, the Finger Lakes Concert Band brings together instrumentalists from around the Finger Lakes region to perform a wide variety of exciting music.

For this concert, we travel to Italy for wind band arrangements of Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma,” Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, selections from Rossini’s Italian in Algiers, themes from great Italian movies, and more.

Spotlight on Faculty – Passionate Spring
Event summary
Members of the Hochstein String Faculty perform this celebration of music with a Romantic flair.

The program includes Arnold Bax’s expansive Harp Quintet; Three Tangos by Piazzolla, full of dramatic and intriguing expressions; Mark O’Connor’s joyful Appalachian Waltz; and selections from Dohnanyi’s evocative Serenade, Dvořák’s unusual Terzetto, and Glinka’s operatic Sextet.

Featuring: Eri Noda, violin; Marcos Kreutzer, violin; Pia Liptak, violin; Katie Worley, violin; Heather Misula, violin; Megan Kemp, viola; Olita Povero, viola; Michelle Walker, viola; Kathleen Murphy Kemp, cello; Jennifer Carpenter, cello; Cora Swenson Lee, cello; Wan Ling Chuang, bass; Grace Wong, harp; Yi-Wen Chang, piano

Community Celebration for Christopher Morrison
Event summary
The public is invited to a celebration of life and love for recently deceased local dancer-educator, and former Hochstein faculty member, Christopher Morrison. Tributes and performances from the local arts community will grace the Hochstein Performance Hall stage.
Event details

Christopher died from pancreatic cancer on January 12 in New York City. His local legacy is so strong that volunteers have come together to honor him in song, dance, and spoken word in this special celebration. A memorial reception immediately follows in Dance Studio 2.

Christopher impacted so many local organizations that will be represented at the Celebration. He either danced, choreographed, or taught at Garth Fagan Dance, The Hochstein School, Borinquen Dance Theatre, Biodance, Timothy M. Draper Center For Dance Education, Midtown Athletic Club, East High School, School Without Walls, The Harley School, the JCC, and many area festivals.

Dear friends will offer tributes such as Thomas Warfield, musical artist and assistant professor at NTID, and Maria Battista-Hancock, whom Christopher worked with in Hochstein's Music Therapy program.

Donations are being collected for the Christopher Morrison Fund at The Hochstein School - a fund created to celebrate Christopher's passion for dance and honor his legacy by providing need-based financial assistance for students in our dance program.

For gifts to be included in the Christopher Morrison Fund, please be sure to specify your gift is in his memory.

Chamber for the Pantry
Event summary
This special performance by Hochstein’s Chamber Music Connection ensembles benefits the Brighton Food Depot’s Backpack Program, which supplies 100 bags of kid-friendly items each month to needy children at several Rochester City schools.
Event details

During the concert, student chamber ensembles will perform classical music. Admission is free with the donation of a non-perishable food item for the Brighton Food Depot’s pantry.

Specific kid-friendly items needed: vegetables, spaghetti sauce, entree (any canned food with meat), boxed pasta, low-sugar cereal, peanut butter, jelly, mac-n-cheese, canned fruit, and soup.
