Buffalo Music Hall of Fame members Geno McManus, Frank Grizanti, Joe Rozler and Rob Lynch present The Beatles’ sound in a live setting. No costumes, no wigs, no gimmicks!

The Hochstein School’s free lunchtime “brown bag” Live from Hochstein concert series takes place in the Hochstein Performance Hall and is broadcast live on WXXI Classical 91.5/ 90.3 FM.

Sidney and Barbara Sobel have provided continuous underwriting of the Live from Hochstein Broadcast & Concert Series since 1993.

Live from Hochstein is also made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Junior Wind Symphony Fall Concert
Event summary
The Hochstein Junior Wind Symphony, directed by John Rolland, presents its fall concert of wind band music.
Event details

Hochstein’s Junior Wind Symphony features wind, percussion, and brass players in grades 7 and 8. The ensemble meets for six weeks in September and October to prepare music for this fall concert, which is free and open to the public.

The program includes the rhythmically exhilarating “Joie de Vivre” by Gary Gilroy, “Yorkshire Ballad” by American wind band composer James Barnes, “Novo Lenio” – two Latin words meaning a new and better change – by Sam Hazo, and “March of the Trolls” by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg.

Live from Hochstein: Superb String Soloists from Eastman
Event summary
Featuring Performer’s Certificate students from the Strings, Harp, and Guitar Department of the Eastman School of Music, performing selections by Andrés Martín, Adam Ben Ezra, Schubert, Tarrega, de Falla, and Saint-Saëns.

Bassist Justin McCulloch performs the first movement from the Bass Concerto by Andrés Martín and "Flamenco" by Adam Ben Ezra. Guitarist Maya Lončar will be playing the Gran Jota by Francisco Tarrega and Ständschen by Franz Schubert (arr. J.K. Mertz). Cellist Dominic Lee performs Manuel De Falla's “Ritual Fire Dance” and “Le Cygne” by Camille Saint-Saëns.

You’re invited to come in costume and join the monster party! Featuring spooktaculary musical treats like Bach’s Toccata in D minor, “Infernal Dance” from The Firebird, and In the Hall of the Mountain King.

Finger Lakes Concert Band: The Final Frontier
Event summary
The Finger Lakes Concert Band performs its fall concert, featuring music inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.
Event details

Under the direction of Gregory Kane, the Finger Lakes Concert Band brings together instrumentalists from around the Finger Lakes region to perform a wide variety of exciting music for wind instruments. The ensemble includes adult instrumentalists and advanced high school students.

Inspired by the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, the program features music with an outer space theme, including selections from Gustav Holst’s The Planets, the soundtracks to Star Wars and Star Trek, and “When You Wish Upon a Star.”

General admission tickets are $5, free for students 18 or under.

Hochstein Philharmonia & Sinfonia Joint Concert

Musicians in Hochstein’s Philharmonia and Sinfonia orchestral ensembles give a joint concert.
Event details

Musicians in Hochstein’s Philharmonia (grades 6-11) and Sinfonia (grades 4-9) orchestral ensembles – led by Director John Fetter with Assistant Director Matt Osika – give a joint fall concert, which is free and open to the public.

The Philharmonia program includes Capriccio Italien by Tchaikovsky, De Falla’s “Ritual Fire Dance” from El Amor Brujo, and the fourth movement of Brahms’ Symphony No. 4.

The Sinfonia half of the program includes Star Valley Suite by composer Robert Frost and Mantras by Richard Meyer.

Live from Hochstein: Syrinx: XXII
Event summary
Featuring António Carrilho, recorders; Katharine Rawdon, flutes; Raj Bhimani, piano.
Event details

Syrinx: XXII performs on piano and a vast array of flutes and recorders, taking a new approach to music-making and programming looking forward to the 22nd Century. This concert includes Mozart’s Trio in E-flat Major – which Mozart wrote so he could play it with two of his closest friends – as well as works by Christoph Willibald Gluck and Sören Sieg.
