Prophet of Freedom: Honoring Frederick Douglass in Word and Song
Event summary
This free, family-friendly, and uplifting public celebration of Frederick Douglass will feature a talk and book signing by renowned Yale historian David Blight, a moving musical component, special guests, and more.

This special event is co-sponsored by departments and programs at the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology and is a part of the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass, celebrated citywide in Rochester in 2018.

The program will feature a talk and book signing by renowned Yale historian David Blight, whose new and definitive biography, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, has just been released. Dr. Blight will sign books after the event and there will be a special commemorative bookplate available for those getting their books signed, designed by Travis and printed by Amelia at the Cary, RIT on a 19th-century handpress.

The evening will also include a moving musical component in honor of Douglass’s life and legacy, and a few other surprises, including special guests and more. 

Community groups, church groups, and school groups are encouraged to attend, and free parking is available. This event’s focus on inclusion and equal communication and physical access will include ASL interpreters and a ramp entrance to the space.

Live from Hochstein – Madrigalia: A Cup of Good Cheer
Event summary
Featuring Madrigalia; Cary Ratcliff, artistic director. Our annual celebration of the holiday season with the choral chamber ensemble Madrigalia.

The program includes a Jewish folk song and a Mexican carol accompanied by Margaret Quackenbush on clarinet, oboe soloist Heather Watras on “Water Under Snow is Weary,” English and Puerto Rican carols, music of Bach and Ratcliff, and “Let It Snow!” The audience is invited to join in a singalong to end the concert.

Hosted by WXXI Classical 91.5’s Mona Seghatoleslami and broadcast live on WXXI Classical 91.5/ 90.3 FM, Live from Hochstein is the longest-running live broadcast concert series in Western New York. 

The weekly concert series gives downtown business people, teachers, families, students, and friends an opportunity to enjoy classical music by outstanding musicians, including soloists, duets, and small ensembles.

 

Sidney and Barbara Sobel have provided continuous underwriting of the Live from Hochstein Broadcast & Concert Series since 1993.

Live from Hochstein is also made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Holiday Prism Concert
Event summary
Hochstein ensembles perform a holiday concert in the Prism format. Performers set up in different parts of the Performance Hall and the performance runs continuously for about an hour.

The performers include chamber groups, guitar ensemble, flute choir, trombone choir, cello choir, piano trio, jazz combo, and HochStrings Adult Chamber Orchestra.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Holiday Concert of Young Voices
Event summary
Young singers in Hochstein’s choral program—Hochstein Singers and Youth Singers, directed by Maryellen Giese, and the Hochstein Little Singers, directed by Grace Adams—will be featured in this free afternoon concert.

The program includes music appropriate to the time of year, including arrangements of seasonal folk songs from Spain, France, England, and the Isle of Man; “Agnes Dei” from John Rutter’s Mass of the Children; Explore, Dream, Discover, with words by Mark Twain; the African-American spiritual Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit; Cold and Fugue Season, inspired by J.S. Bach’s Fugue in G Minor; The Weather Song, with music by Mozart and words by Maurice Gardner; and Jingle Bell Rock.

The concert is free and open to the public. A reception follows the concert.

Madrigalia’s expansive interpretation of the December holidays, with works of Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa, celebrations both secular and sacred, meditations on the darkness of the winter solstice, and words of hope, selected to ground our own holidays, and to open us to the celebrations of others.

With the Bach Children’s Chorus of Nazareth College, joined by Peggy Quackenbush, clarinet, Justin McCullough, bass, and Orlando Diaz, piano.

HochStrings Holiday Concert
Event summary
The HochStrings Adult Chamber Orchestra, directed by Pia Liptak, performs a program of seasonal music.
Event details

The program includes “Trepak” from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, Waltz from Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty, romantic themes by Schubert, music of The Beatles, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz, and Sibelius’ Finlandia, sometimes referred to as “A Song of Peace.”

This concert is free and open to the public.

Rochester Gay Men's Chorus Holiday Concert
Event details

The concert features the Flower City Pride Band and the Rochettes and will include the popular audience sing-along.  The repertoire is a balance of sacred & secular and includes: Born, Born in Bethlehem; Cantate Domino; Gesu Bambino; Gloucestershire Wassail; Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; Here We Come a-Wassailing; Home for the Holidays; It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year; The Little Drummer Boy; Prayer of the Children; Shepherds Awake!; While Shepherds Watched Their Sleep.

FLCB and FLSO Holiday Concert
Event summary
The Finger Lakes Concert Band (FLCB), under the direction of Gregory Kane, and the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra (FLSO), directed by Shade Zajac, present a special joint concert featuring traditional and contemporary holiday classics.

The program includes Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride and A Christmas Festival, German Carol Festival, Hanukkah Holiday, In Dulci Jubilo, Coventry Carol, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, and selections from The Nutcracker.

The Finger Lakes Concert Band brings together instrumentalists from around the Finger Lakes region to perform a wide variety of exciting music. 

The Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra was formed in the fall of 1971 and is comprised of a very diverse group including professionals of many vocations, musicians, and students in the Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes areas.

General admission tickets are $8, free for students 18 or under.
