2018 Honors Convocation
Event summary
Hochstein showcases the 13 Merit Scholarship winners in grades 5-12 and two Honors Certificate Program graduates in this special student performance concert.
Event details

The scholarship winners were selected during auditions that were held January–March 2018. There will be a reception after the concert to celebrate the performers.

Spring Concert of Young Voices
Event summary
Young singers in Hochstein’s choral program—Hochstein Singers and Youth Singers, directed by Maryellen Giese, and the Hochstein Little Singers, directed by Grace Adams—will be featured in this free afternoon concert.

The program includes “Nursery Rhyme Nonsense;” the English folk song “Little Fox” with accompaniment by Dr. Margaret Quackenbush on clarinet; a Ladino song celebrating springtime; “It Takes a Village,” adapted from a West African saying and accompanied with djembe drum; a song set to the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson; “A-Tisket, A-Tasket” made famous by Ella Fitzgerald; Irving Berlin’s “Alexander’s Ragtime Band;“ and Pentatonix’s arrangement of “Take Me Home.”

Event summary
Michael Butterman conducts the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in works by Butterworth, Smyth, and Schumann, with soloists Juliana Athayde, violin, and W. Peter Kurau, horn.

Event summary
Under the direction of Gregory Kane, the Finger Lakes Concert Band brings together instrumentalists from around the Finger Lakes region – ages 15 to 90 – to perform a wide variety of exciting wind band music.

The group closes out their 2017-18 concert season with a program entitled “Spiritoso!” The program will feature A Jubilant Overture, reflecting the joy of Spring and the exuberance of youth, by Alfred Reed; Ticheli’s joyful Sun Dance; the forever interesting Variations on America by Charles Ives; and more.

General admission tickets are $5, free for students 18 or under.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating and lunch, or pick up a lunch at one of the many area restaurants. New this year: the rain location is at MCC’s downtown campus and in the event of rain, the change in venue will be announced via social media.

Western New York’s favorite troubadours, The Dady Brothers are a musical duo who have been performing and winning the hearts of crowds professionally for more than 40 years. John and Joe Dady’s music transcends genres and generations by melding American folk roots and Irish traditional influences into an amalgam of sound that is uniquely their own. Highly skilled players and singers, they have performed well over 5,000 shows at concert halls, schools, music festivals, and nightclubs from Alaska to Ireland, the Caribbean to Nova Scotia. Their instruments include guitar, four- and five-string banjo, pennywhistle, ukulele, fiddle, mandolin, bodhran, harmonica, concertina, and the uilleann pipes. www.dadybros.com

Spring Dance Gala
Event summary
Students take the stage in this free afternoon performance celebrating Hochstein’s unique and diverse dance department, which includes ballet, tap, modern, and Latin dance.
Event details

The program includes choreography to selections from “Sleeping Beauty,” “Don Quixote,” “Someday My Prince Will Come,” “Under the Sea,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “Fascinating Rhythm,” and much more.

At Hochstein, the emphasis is on the educational experience and the joy of dance, led by teachers specifically trained to work with children.

Event summary
Join us for a free lunchtime concert in High Falls, featuring Madeleine McQueen
Event details

Location: Special concert on campus at Monroe Community College, 321 State Street, Rochester. Click here for a map.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seating and lunch, or pick up a lunch at one of the many area restaurants. 

Madeleine McQueen cuts through her own tunes with a powerful voice, weaving poetic lyrics with unique melodies that envelope each song she pens. Her musical influences range from Nirvana and Florence Welch to Amy Winehouse and Joni Mitchell. City Newspaper says, “Madeleine McQueen projects spiritually and soulfully with a beguiling innocence and resolve over a bed of pop-rock splendor and sparkle.” For this concert, she will be joined by Will Smillie, guitar; Dylan Niver, drums; and Mike Wall, bass. http://madeleinemcqueen.com

The HochStrings Adult Chamber Orchestra, directed by Pia Liptak, performs a concert of string music.

The program includes the theme song from the Italian movie Cinema Paradiso, Russian serenades, a Czech lullaby by the concentration camp composer Ilse Weber, To a Wild Rose by American composer Edward McDowell, and selections from Handel’s Water Music.

Note: This concert is part of the 2018 Make Music Day Rochester celebration.
Enjoy WXXI's Make Music Day activities hosted by Brenda Tremblay at Granite Mills Park before and after the concert (11:00 am - 3:00 pm). This includes informal performances and activity tables where kids and adults can make their own shaker (or other simple instrument). For more info, visit the WXXI web site.

Collectively and individually, the Bradley Brothers have performed for 30 years across the United States, Canada, and Europe. The Bossa Nova Bradley Brothers is the brainchild of singer and guitarist Todd Bradley, who has painstakingly studied the works of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfa, and Baden Powell, among others. Julio Pabon (percussion) and Brian Williams (bass) are in demand throughout the Rochester area as sidemen and session players. Pianist and trumpeter Scott Bradley is a songwriter whose work with the Bill Tiberio Band can be heard on local and internet jazz stations.
