Live from Hochstein – A Celebration of Dance

Return

Event summary
Featuring E-Na Song, piano.
Event details

Inspired by people close to her who are all dancers – including her mother, who is a traditional Korean dancer; her Eastman School professor, Rebecca Penneys, a former ballet dancer; and her significant other, also a former ballet dancer – E-Na Song explores a variety of dance-influenced music in various writing styles and time periods.

This program features Beethoven’s uplifting Polonaise; Liszt’s dramatic and lyrical Tarantella, which has long been on Song’s wish list of pieces to learn; Dances of Marosszek by Kodály, an emotionally wide-ranging piece based on folk tunes from Hungary; and “Sleepwalker’s Shuffle” from Albright’s The Dream Rags, inspired by ragtime music.

Born in Korea, Dr. E-Na Song is a concert pianist, collaborative pianist, and educator. As an active performer, she has performed throughout the US, Poland, Spain, Austria, and Korea. Recently she has appeared in venues such as Weill Recital Hall (Carnegie Hall), Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, and The Hochstein School. When she is not performing or teaching, Song works as the Assistant Director of the Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival.

The Hochstein School’s free noontime Live from Hochstein concert series will be hosted by WXXI Classical’s Brenda Tremblay and broadcast live on WXXI Classical. Listen to the concert at WXXI-FM 91.5, WXXY 90.3, or online at https://www.wxxiclassical.org. Listen to an encore broadcast on WXXI Classical 91.5 FM at 10:00 pm the day of the concert.

* Masks and vaccination are encouraged but not required. Please note that only bottled water is allowed in the newly renovated hall.

The Hochstein School is deeply grateful to Sidney and Barbara Sobel, who have generously provided continuous underwriting of Live from Hochstein since 1993.
