Let's CELEBRATE!
When planning for our 100th, we never anticipated needing to cancel much of our celebration because of the pandemic. Below is a list of the planned events that were scheduled. We hope that we will be able to reschedule some of these excellent celebrations when we are able.
January:
Alumni Orchestra Concert
Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 8:00 pm
Created in 2010 as a reunion of musicians with connections to Hochstein, the 40-member Hochstein Alumni Orchestra has reunited each year to present free, high-quality concerts, directed by Evan Meccarello. Members of the HAO have gone on to win international contests, have received mention by music critic Alex Ross in The New Yorker magazine, and earned opportunities to play in professional orchestras.
February:
Youth Wind Symphony Concert

The Hochstein Youth Wind Symphony, directed by John Rolland, presents a winter concert of wind band music, including works by LoPresti, Zdechlik, Ticheli, and Holsinger.
Centennial Orchestra Concert
Sunday, February 9, 2020 at 2:00 pm
For the first time ever, all four Hochstein youth orchestras combine to perform a joint concert as part of Hochstein’s Centennial Celebration. These include musicians from the 80-member Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra, directed by Casey Springstead; Philharmonia, directed by John Fetter and Matt Osika; Sinfonia, directed by John Fetter; and Concertino Strings, directed by Marcos Kreutzer. The program includes music by Schubert, Mussorgsky, Bach, John Williams, and Saint-Saëns, with all four orchestras joining together to play the last movement of Respighi’s Pines of Rome.
Spotlight on Faculty – Music of Schubert and Kreisler

Featuring Tyler Cassidy-Heacock, soprano; Cora Swenson Lee, cello; and Warner Iveris, guitar. The program is built around two pieces David Hochstein is known to have played on violin: Schubert’s lied “Ave Maria” and Fritz Kreisler’s “Liebesleid.”

Live from Hochstein - Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra

Musicians from the 86-member Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra, directed by Casey Springstead, perform a special concert for The Hochstein School’s free lunchtime “brown bag” Live from Hochstein concert series, which is broadcast live on WXXI Classical 91.5/ 90.3 FM. A full orchestra for advanced strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion students in grades 7–12, the HYSO presents three concerts per year along with periodic international tours.

Featuring: Joanna Bassett, flute; Yi-Wen Chang, piano; Joseph Werner, piano; Richard Felice, percussion; Pia Liptak, violin; Kathleen Murphy Kemp, cello; and Michael Griffin, bass, performing works by Bolling, Shostakovich, Pärt, and Schnittke.

Live from Hochstein - Antara Winds/Wilmot Wind Quintet

Antara Winds perform on The Hochstein School’s free lunchtime “brown bag” Live from Hochstein concert series, joined by the Wilmot Wind Quintet of Nazareth College. The musicians include Diane Smith, flute; Annette Barrington, flute; Judith Ricker, oboe; Terry Smith, oboe; Margaret Quackenbush, clarinet; Marcy Bacon, clarinet; Natalya Rose Vrbsky, bassoon; Keith Koster, bassoon; Jonathan Dozois, horn; Colleen Wolf, horn; and Jared Chase, conductor. The featured work is Sacred Women, a double woodwind quintet by Jeff Scott.

This year's Hochstein Merit Scholarship winners are Joshua Fugate, violin (student of Pia Liptak) and Isaac Pollock, guitar (student of Tim Shannon).
Live from Hochstein - Semplice Duo: Cristina Ballatori and Kevin Chance

The Hochstein School’s free lunchtime “brown bag” Live from Hochstein concert series – which is broadcast live on WXXI Classical 91.5/ 90.3 FM – features Hochstein alumna Cristina Ballatori on flute and Kevin Chance, piano. She has performed across the United States, Europe, England, and Latin America as a recitalist, soloist, chamber and orchestral musician and teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Their concert celebrates the music of female composers from the 18th through 21st Centuries, including works by Sofia Gubaidulina, Valerie Coleman, Princess Amalie of Prussia, and Amanda Harberg.

Live from Hochstein - String Fantasies: Early 20th-Century Duos for Violin and Cello

The Hochstein School’s free lunchtime “brown bag” Live from Hochstein concert series – which is broadcast live on WXXI Classical 91.5/ 90.3 FM – features Hochstein cello faculty member Cora Swenson Lee and violinist Soo Yeon Kim performing early 20th-century duos for violin and cello. The program includes music by Glière, Ravel, and Kodály.
Presberg Ensembles Concert

This continuous musical event features performers set up in different parts of the Performance Hall, performing without applause or gaps between the performances. This concert highlights the excellence of Hochstein’s students and faculty and includes ensembles from Hochstein’s chamber music, voice, and instrumental programs.

The Hochstein School’s free lunchtime “brown bag” Live from Hochstein concert series – which is broadcast live on WXXI Classical 91.5/ 90.3 FM – features Gossamer Edge: Allyn Van Dusen, mezzo-soprano; Rita George Simmons, flute; and Paula Rodney Bobb, piano, performing music set to poetry by famed Indian Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, as well as works by Franz Schubert, Gabriel Fauré, and Cary Ratcliff.

2020 Honors Convocation

Hochstein showcases the Merit Scholarship winners in grades 5-12, as well as Honors Certificate Program students, in this special student performance concert.
Spring Concert of Young Voices

Young singers in Hochstein’s choral program—Hochstein Singers and Youth Singers, directed by Maryellen Giese, and the Hochstein Little Singers, directed by Grace Adams—will be featured in this free afternoon concert.
June:
Spring Dance Gala
Saturday, June 6, 2020 at 2:30 pm
Students take the stage in this free afternoon performance celebrating Hochstein’s unique and diverse dance program, which includes ballet, tap, modern, Latin, African dance and drumming, Flamenco, and hip hop.
Summer:
Hochstein at High Falls: Fiesta with Mambo Kings
Thursday, July 9; 12:10 pm; Granite Mills Park
Celebrate Hochstein’s Centennial with Mambo Kings and Borinquen Dance Theatre! See a demonstration of Latin dance by Borinquen dancers before the concert at 11:55 am, then dance with them while Mambo Kings play their signature style of Latin jazz. The band consists of Mambo Kings’ musical director and pianist Richard DeLaney, percussionist Freddy Colón, saxophonist John Viavattine, bassist Hector Diaz, and percussionist Tony Padilla.
October:
Live from Hochstein: Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra

Hochstein’s Centennial Gala

Temple B’rith Kodesh
Come dressed to celebrate this special occasion – 1920s attire encouraged; black-tie optional. The event includes student performances and impact stories. Since its founding in 1920, Hochstein has had a mission focusing on providing excellent music and dance education for people of any age, ability, or socioeconomic status. This event showcases Hochstein’s ongoing commitment to making need-based scholarships available to those in the Greater Rochester Area.

Expressive Arts Holiday Showcase

Students in Hochstein’s Expressive Arts program of music, art, and dance therapy will perform in this free holiday showcase. This showcase also celebrates the 45th anniversary of music therapy programs at Hochstein.
Holiday Ensemble Prism Concert

Hochstein ensembles perform a holiday concert in the Prism format. Performers set up in different parts of the Performance Hall and the performance runs continuously for about an hour.
