Haven’t found the time to take Basic Music Theory? This intensive version of our standard 36-week course is just the answer! This class reviews the fundamentals of music theory (note-reading, meter, scales/key signatures), with more in-depth work on intervals, chords, Roman Numeral analysis, embellishing tones, dictation skills, tune harmonization, and beginning Species Counterpoint, geared for teens and adults. Because of the condensed time frame, students should be prepared to supplement their course work with independent work between classes.

Fee: $10 registration fee; $306* tuition; $225 if enrolled in individual lessons at Hochstein. (Fees are as of Summer 2021.)

AP MUSIC THEORY I: FORM & HARMONY - ONLINE

Lauren Irschick, Instructor
6 Mondays & 6 Wednesdays

July 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, & 28, 2021
August 2, 4, 9, 11, & 16, 2021

6:30-8:00 pm
for students entering grades 10-12 and adults

Pre-requisite: Basic Music Theory

Building on the concepts learned in Basic Theory, this class reviews chords and Roman Numeral analysis, while delving more completely into the areas of cadence types, musical form, figured bass, harmonization, and secondary chords. In addition, students will engage in some written and listening analysis and dictation and sight-singing, but the class does not cover all materials necessary for preparation for the AP test. Because of the condensed time frame, students should be prepared to supplement their course work with independent work between classes.

Fee: $10 registration fee; $306* tuition; $225 if enrolled in individual lessons at Hochstein. (Fees are as of Summer 2021.)

BEGINNING AGAIN: A MUSIC THEORY SURVEY FOR ADULTS - ONLINE

Lauren Irschick, Instructor
6 Tuesdays
July 6-August 10, 2021
6:00-7:00 pm
open to adults 18 and older, returning to music or beginning music lessons
Pre-requisite: none – only an interest in music theory!

Are you coming back to music, or picking it up as a beginner? Beginning Again is geared towards those adult students who are interested in improving their reading and listening skills, but do not feel ready for the traditional Basic Theory class. Each class is based on several pieces from the classical repertoire. Topics explored include clef reading, major and minor scales, intervals, chords, and musical form. After this class, students should be able to comfortably join the Basic Theory class offered during the school year if interested.

Fee: $10 registration fee; $102* tuition; $75 if enrolled in individual lessons at Hochstein. (Fees are as of Summer 2021.)
