Until the 20th century, pianists were often performers, composers, improvisers, and transcribers. However, pianists today are mostly dedicated to playing only other people’s works. In this concert, Chang resumes these roles by transforming Mozart’s tunes with improvisatory styles from pianists of different periods. Works include music/transcriptions by Mozart, Czerny, Stephen Hough, Dibyte, and Yi-Wen Chang.
A well-established concert pianist, Yi-Wen Chang has been praised for her impeccable technique and creative communicative ideas. She has appeared as a soloist and collaborative pianist in the United States, Canada, Russia, and Taiwan. In 2015, she launched the “Then and Now” concert series combining traditional and contemporary music and presenting their evolution from the past to present. Chang is on the piano faculty of The Hochstein School and Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
