Violinist Soo Yeon Kim and cellist and Hochstein faculty member Cora Swenson Lee perform early 20th-century duos for violin and cello, including music by Glière, Ravel, and Kodály. Part of Hochstein's Centennial Celebration!

The violin and cello may seem like a natural pair, but there is surprisingly little concert music written specifically for the two instruments as a duo. Reinhold Glière was one of the first composers to experiment with this beautiful combination, in his charming Eight Pieces in the late romantic style. Zoltán Kodály and Maurice Ravel each wrote a sonata for violin and cello, both of which are now staples of the repertoire. These two works are full of life, showing off not only the virtuosity of the performers but also a full spectrum of colors, timbres, and textures.

Cora Swenson Lee has performed in venues across the United States and internationally. Her early music ensemble, Trio Speranza, concertizes each season, and in 2014 won the Presentation Prize at Early Music America’s Baroque Performance Competition.

Korean-born violinist Soo Yeon Kim is a dynamic performer and educator. She has appeared in the U.S. and internationally both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. She is Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola at Houghton College.
