Described as “one of the Rochester area’s unique and notable treasures” (SUNY Brockport’s The Stylus), the RPO Marimba Band was established in 1979 and is comprised of members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s current percussion section. The RPO Marimba Band performs their own arrangements of Latin, pop, and jazz tunes on a wide array of melodic percussion instruments such as marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel, steel drum, and drum set.
The program for this concert includes the band's arrangements of music by Sting, the Gipsy Kings, renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie, and Frank Zappa as well as selections from Riverdance, the French film Amelie, and a recording by Harry Belafonte. Read the online program notes.
Since their formation, the RPO Marimba Band has performed in venues throughout Western New York. The musicians include Andrew Bockman, Anthony Calabrese, Tom Nanni, Kyle Peters, Kristen Shiner McGuire, and Brian Stotz.
The Hochstein School’s free noontime Live from Hochstein concert series will be hosted by WXXI Classical’s Mona Seghatoleslami and broadcast live on WXXI Classical. Listen to the concert at WXXI-FM 91.5, WXXY 90.3, or online at https://www.classical915.org/.
