HochStrings stayed together during the pandemic year since March 2020 when teaching went online – basically on the day of the group’s last planned concert, which did not take place. The group is still here and is stronger than ever both in playing and in friendship.
The program is varied and chosen from the pieces learned during the pandemic online sessions. Randy Newman’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from Toy Story underscores the group’s strong bonding both during the last year and as we meet again “live.”
“Agincourt” by Doug Spata has exciting rhythmic patterns that are so much more fun to work on together rather than to follow with a recording playing online.
In Haydn’s String Quartet, No. 3, “The Bird,” HochStrings is working on the refinement of the Classical style and coordination of sound. It is precious being together and having the ability to listen to each other and invaluable to work on creating a unified ensemble sound.
“The Wellerman” is a New Zealand whale-hunting song from the 1800s that became very popular on TicToc last year.
Mendelssohn’s well-known Nocturne from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, originally a beautiful solo for horn, evokes the magic slumber of the lovers in the moonlit forest.
This program reflects the palette of joy that is and embodies HochStrings: from the serious work with the music to the fun and happy enjoyment and the deep care, interest, and compassion everyone shows for one another.
