Spotlight on Faculty – Vertex Saxophone Quartet: Winter Thoughts

Return
24 Jan, 2020 7:00 PM — 24 Jan, 2020 8:00 PM    50 North Plymouth Avenue Rochester New York United States
Event summary
Featuring the Vertex Saxophone Quartet performing music of Piazzolla, Torke, Brooks, Wirshba, Wilson, and Wiedoeft.
Event details

Featuring the Vertex Saxophone Quartet: Chisato Eda Marling, soprano saxophone; Barbara Brown, alto saxophone; Chris Doser, tenor saxophone; Nancy Boone-Bahr, baritone saxophone.

The program features music with a winter theme, including “Winter Thoughts” by recent Setnor School of Music-Syracuse University grad Carle Wirshba, and “Buenos Aires Winter” from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Argentinian tango master Astor Piazzolla. The quartet warms things up with “July” by Eastman grad Michael Torke and “Come Sunday Morning” – inspired by gospel music from the deep South – by Eastman grad Dana Wilson. Rounding things out is “Four-Play” by Richard Brooks – blending jazz, blues, and contemporary classical music – and the pure fun of “Saxema” by Rudy Wiedoeft, written in 1920 in an exuberant, jazzy style. Just the thing to celebrate Hochstein’s Centennial!

Since 1991, Spotlight on Faculty has highlighted the prestigious Hochstein faculty in a variety of ensembles and musical genres from chamber music and dance to jazz, contemporary, and classical. A key feature of the Spotlight on Faculty concerts is that Hochstein faculty members work together to create their own program and submit proposals to perform on the series.

Each concert begins at 7:00 pm, lasts about an hour, and is followed by a “meet the artists” reception.

Admission is $10 per person, with a $20 family maximum. Concerts are free to Hochstein students/families, faculty, and staff.

The Spotlight on Faculty concert series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
