Voice instructor Elizabeth Lind, who joined the Hochstein faculty this past fall, issued a song challenge to students in her voice studio at the beginning of the year, hoping to inspire them to explore different genres of music.
The song challenge is in the form of a grid with different topics for them to work on. She says, “I was inspired by the idea of New Year’s resolutions but wanted to expand it for lessons. Each student is completing this at their own pace.”
One of the surprising reactions to the topic “memorizing a song in a language other than English” was from one of her youngest students. Elizabeth recalls, “her face lit up and she started singing her favorite K-Pop song in Korean. I was blown away!”
Another one of her students is interested in animation and is thinking about using the “create artwork based on one of your voice lesson songs” topic to create an animated music video for the song.
The challenge that inspired the deepest conversations was the “memorize a song that reflects this time in history” topic. She says, “it has been so humbling to listen to students talk about the gift of more time with their families, their concern for the health of others, and their global perspectives during such an uncertain time.”
“Lessons are a safe place to metabolize feelings about this unusual period of time and I’m honored to be one of their safe places.”
