James Hallenbeck Scholarship Fund

Established in Spring of 2023, the James Hallenbeck Scholarship Fund was created in memory of James, who tragically lost his life in August 2022. James was a creative and generous young man who treated everyone with the utmost respect. He believed in social justice and was known for being a deep listener, which made people truly feel heard.

Music was a common thread throughout James’ life. He began playing piano in first grade and later taught himself to play the accordion in his teenage years. James loved metal music and played in several Rochester and Buffalo bands that showcased his passion.

In honor of his life and love of music, his parents Stephen and Carol Hallenbeck created a scholarship fund at The Hochstein School, which provides full, needs-based tuition assistance for piano lessons to students. Priority is given to those who live in the Plymouth-Exchange and surrounding neighborhoods, where James lived at the time of his death. The Hallenbeck family also graciously donated James’s prized keyboard, which will be used by Hochstein students for years to come as we celebrate his beautiful legacy.
