Two Hochstein students win awards at prestigious Manolov Competition

Congratulations to Hochstein violin students Noah Busch and Joshua Lin, who performed in the final round of the Manolov International Music Competition in Garden City, NY on May 11. They each won a silver medal/second prize for their respective age groups!

A two-time medalist in the Manolov Competition (he also competed in 2022, earning second prize), Noah received a scholarship in addition to the medal. Joshua tied for second place in his age group (no first place was awarded) and the Long Island Music Magazine said, “Tobia Im and Joshua Lin showcased their violin prowess, earning recognition for their exceptional performances.”

This prestigious competition is named in honor of the pioneering Bulgarian composer, conductor, and pedagogue Emanuil Manolov, and is held every two years. It awards prizes for violin and piano performances in three age groups. Participants are required to perform contrasting pieces from different periods of Classical music and are encouraged, but not required, to perform a work by a Bulgarian composer.

Noah played Loure from Bach’s E-Major Partita for Solo Violin and Rachenitza by Bulgarian composer Petar Christoskov. Joshua played the Polish Capriccio by Grażyna Bacewicz and Zigeunerweisen, Op. 20, by Pablo de Sarasate.

He has participated in numerous honors ensembles, including NYSSMA All-County and Area All-State Orchestras, as well as the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra, which he has been a member of since seventh grade. He recently performed a solo as one of the HYSO Concerto Competition Winners this year. He also participates in Hochstein’s Chamber Music Connection program and is on track to complete Hochstein’s Honors Certificate Program. Noah also won second place in the Manolov Competition in 2022.

Joshua started playing in the Hochstein Concertino Strings and is now a member of the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra. He is also a horn player in the Victor Intermediate School band.
