Check out Hochstein’s Eclipse Playlist for music selected by faculty and staff!

As we gear up for the total eclipse in Rochester on April 8, enjoy music from Hochstein’s Eclipse Playlist on YouTube, as selected by Hochstein faculty and staff. There are selections from classical to pop to progressive rock!

Not surprisingly, “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” “Here Comes the Sun,” “Vincent (Starry Starry Night),” and even Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” are on the list, but also the aria “Total Eclipse” from Handel’s oratorio Samson, depicting Samson’s anguished lament at losing his eye sight.

Gwen Paker shared that she witnessed the total solar eclipse with her family in 2017, driving hours to get to the line of totality and ending up in a park with lots of other travelers hoping to see the sun go out. She says that “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was their unofficial theme song. “It makes me think of that afternoon with my family every time I hear it! I plan to bring back the tradition for this solar eclipse too, making another eclipse’s worth of memories!”

Kathy Kemp recommended “You Are My Sunshine” – which she would sing to her granddaughter, Cady. For a different take on the eclipse, listen to Allison Maney’s selection, “Little Neutrino” by Klaatu. She says, “It describes the journey from the Sun to us on Earth of a neutrino (a subatomic particle formed as a byproduct of nuclear fusion).”

The moon gets its fair share of picks, including “Bad Moon Rising,” “Dancing in the Moonlight,” “Moonshadow,” and even “Werewolves of London.”

Bruce Aldridge thought of the traffic jam aspect of the total eclipse, recommending Jimi Hendrix’s “Crosstown Traffic” (and yes, that's a kazoo he’s playing in a couple places).

Click here or use the viewer below to listen to the full playlist – you can even play all selections sequentially for a soundtrack to accompany your eclipse viewing. Please note that Hochstein will be closed on Monday, April 8, so that all of our students and families have the chance to enjoy this special celestial event.

Happy totality!
