Hochstein student wins first place in flute competition

posted on

Congratulations to the winners of the 2023 Rochester Flute Association (RFA) Performance Competition held on October 20! First place went to Elizabeth Runion, who is a member of the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra (HYSO) and takes flute lessons here with Diane Smith.

A senior at Gates-Chili High School, Lizzie is also a winner of the RPO’s Young Artist Auditions and the HYSO Concerto Competition, performing a solo with the HYSO last February in Borne’s Fantasie Brilliante on Themes from Bizet’s Carmen.

In addition to the HYSO and lessons, she is active in a number of Hochstein programs. She is in two chamber groups, flute choir and woodwind quintet, as part of Chamber Music Connection; a Hochstein Merit Scholar; and a student in the Honors Certificate Program. Last March she performed a solo at Hochstein’s annual gala.

Riley Hubisz took second place in the RFA Performance Competition and Ami Masuda was recognized with Honorable Mention. They all performed in the winners’ recital at the RFA Flute Fair on Saturday, October 21 at Martha Brown Middle School in Fairport.

Congratulations to all!
