Chamber Music Connection camps offered opportunities for ensemble playing

posted on

Hochstein’s Chamber Music Connection (CMC) program offers fun and challenging opportunities for school-age students to learn the art of ensemble playing and connect with other musicians in a small group setting. This month, that included two weeks of CMC summer camps – one for strings and piano and another for woodwind and brass instruments.

In addition to working with Hochstein coaches in small groups to learn repertoire and technique, students also had a chance to play in a larger ensemble. There were also workshops and masterclasses, such as one where a small ensemble worked with flutist (and Hochstein dean) Joanna Bassett on topics such as matching pitch and intonation, dynamics, and creating texture in the music.

Molly McDonald and Aika Ito led the first week of CMC String & Piano summer camps while Ben Jorge, Jeremy Stoner, Terry Smith, and Carl Galland were the directors for the new Woodwind & Brass CMC camp.

Opportunities to participate in Hochstein’s chamber music program continue this fall, starting the week of September 6. Students as young as first grade can sign up for the CMC Prelude Program for strings, while older students can participate in the CMC Signature Chamber Ensemble Program, Duo Program, or Instrument Ensembles. There’s even a similar program for adults that includes a cello choir and guitar ensembles.
