On Sunday, February 26, as part of the “Show for Joe” DVD release event at the Little Theatre, Rochester musician John Dady welcomed Hochstein President & Executive Director Hilary Respass to the stage to provide updates about the Joe Dady Memorial Scholarship Fund at Hochstein.
The Dady family established the scholarship fund to honor John’s brother, Joe Dady, who lost his battle with leukemia in 2019. Inductees into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame, The Dady Brothers performed at Hochstein many times, including as part of the Hochstein at High Falls concert series, and they supported Hochstein’s mission of providing people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities with access to excellent music and dance education.
Proceeds from the sold-out “Show for Joe” concert at Hochstein in November 2019, which featured more than 50 musicians, will go toward the scholarship fund, which in turn will help support tuition assistance for Hochstein students, including those enrolled through the ROCmusic program, which offers intensive after-school, tuition-free instrumental music instruction to students in the City of Rochester.
ROCmusic is a partnership between The Hochstein School, Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester), Eastman Community Music School, Gateways Music Festival, City of Rochester, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Rochester City School District. Joe was a music teacher himself – often quoting the Pete Seeger saying, “When these fingers can strum no longer, hand the old banjo to young ones stronger” – so this is a fitting tribute.
