Adult student Paul Kane finds piano lessons challenging and rewarding

We’re excited to share the story of a Hochstein student who took on the task of learning something completely new later in life. Paul Kane started taking Hochstein’s Piano 101 Class when he was in his 50s, with no prior musical training, and has continued with piano lessons with Dr. Yi-Wen Chang. He is now in his ninth year of studies at Hochstein.

Yi-Wen says, “I find that it’s amazing that even though he started late, he is now able to play different styles of music that he likes and respects.”

Paul says, “Every year is more challenging and more rewarding, and I’m so glad I chose to embark on this journey.”

Paul selected three pieces to record as a video recital. See below to watch the video. Here are Paul’s own notes on each of the pieces:

Bach – “Prelude”: “Bach is always challenging and there is so much to learn along the way. Preparing a piece by this master for performance always feels like a great accomplishment! This Prelude is a deceptively simple melody with a royal, dignified air, almost like a procession, but with a few flourishes.”

Burgmuller – “Consolation”: “One of the joys of a program of study is discovering composers who are new to you. I had not encountered Burgmuller before my piano studies. He is well known for his works for students that are nonetheless very emotional, sometimes lyrical, sometimes dramatic. I find that his themes really resonate with me, and I enjoy playing them.”

Kern/Hammerstein – “All the Things You Are”: “I have a great interest in jazz and have heard this piece played many times by a wide spectrum of artists, often including lengthy improvisations by the different instruments. At my level, it’s satisfying to learn the basic piece – maybe improvisations will come later! For now, it’s enough to enjoy the melodies, chords, and dynamics, and to learn what makes a song like this a classic.”

We love Paul’s enthusiasm for his music – even adding in his own applause in the video! We wish him well on his continued musical journey. We’re so proud of his perseverance.
