HYSO Conductor Apprentice leads orchestra at Sunday’s HYSO & Philharmonia concert

This Sunday’s concert by the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra and Hochstein Philharmonia Orchestra features not only the talented student musicians, including cello soloist Joanna Frank, but it also is the debut of HYSO co-principal cellist Amy Feng as the HYSO Conductor Apprentice.

The student conductor apprentice is chosen from the current membership of the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra, selected through an interview process. The student apprentice conducts sectional rehearsals, plays in the orchestra, and works individually with HYSO conductor Casey Springstead.

Past conductor apprentices include:

  • Luke Pisani and Shawn Mou (2019-20 school year)
  • Nicholas Kinney and Nicole Page (2018-19 school year)
  • Raymond Feng (2017-18 school year)
  • Emily Lang (2016-17 school year)
  • Jonathan Madden (2014-15 AND 2015-16 school year)

Amy and her brother, Raymond, are the only pair of siblings known to have both been HYSO conductor apprentices! She will be conducting the Polka movement from Smetana’s Three Dances from The Bartered Bride. The concert also includes Bruch’s Kol Nidrei; music by Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Smetana, and Verdi; and selections from Raiders of the Lost ArkSuperman, and Lord of the Rings.

Please note that masks are required for the February 13 concert and distancing is encouraged. If you can’t be there in person, watch the live stream on YouTube. Full concert details are at https://hochstein.org/Calendar/Calendar-of-Events.
