HYSO announces winners of Concerto Competition

Congratulations to the winners of the HYSO Concerto Competition, following a very competitive round of auditions last week.

Joanna Frank, cello, will perform Bruch’s “Kol Nidre” with the HYSO on February 13, 2022, and Daniel Kinney, marimba, will perform the third movement of Séjourné’s Concerto for Marimba and Strings with the HYSO on May 8, 2022. Joanna is a sophomore at Brighton High School and Daniel is a senior at Pittsford Sutherland High School.

HYSO Director Casey Springstead said, “These performers gave technically polished and artistically mature performances, and we will look forward to working with them soon.”

Casey added, “And congratulations to everyone who performed tonight. It is always a thrill to hear young people play at such a high level, and while the outcome may not have been what you’d hoped for, you can all take immense pride in your efforts. Congratulations to all of your teachers, too, and thanks to all of the collaborative pianists.”

Special thanks to the HYSO Concerto competition judges for their time and expertise:

- Terry Fonda Smith, Hochstein oboe faculty

- Priscilla Yuen, Assistant Professor of Accompanying, Eastman School of Music

- Zexun (Jason) Shen, Cellist, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra
