The CelloVision 2021 summer camp this past August included interactive workshops, masterclasses, and daily Cello Ensemble. Camp coordinator Natalie Spehar provided some photos of the week’s activities with Hochstein faculty members Jennifer Carpenter, Rachel Mills, Pia Liptak, and John Delmonico.
A highlight of the week was a masterclass with David Ying, cellist with the Ying Quartet, quartet-in-residence at the Eastman School of Music. Five students performed in the masterclass with the entire camp and community guests in the audience.
Natalie said, “David Ying spent a generous amount of time with each performer, coaching them on excerpts from their current solo repertoire and also taking time to share performance tips with the audience. The students told me it was extremely helpful and were excited to apply his advice to their own at-home practice!”
The end-of-week concert was attended by family members and also live-streamed via Zoom for family and friends to tune in from afar. The cello ensemble, led by Pia Liptak, prepared a diverse program that included arrangements of everything from baroque repertoire to the whaling song “Soon May the Wellerman Come” (a recent hit on TikTok)!
Natalie said, “The students digested an incredible amount of repertoire in their five days of ensemble rehearsal and enjoyed receiving coaching from other CelloVision core faculty members as well throughout the week. We had a blast – and are so proud of the students and their focused work and positivity all week long! What a treat to make music in person again!”
Cello instruction at Hochstein happens year-round, but it was great to create some special opportunities for the students at CelloVision this summer. Find out more about cello lessons at Hochstein at https://hochstein.org/Music.
