Hochstein horn students persist with online lessons

Hochstein horn students persist with online lessons

Despite having his wisdom teeth removed in July, Fairport 11th grader Kyle Kasprzak still took his horn lessons online with Colleen Wolf this summer and learned the first two movements of the Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1. He even brought his horn along to have a lesson while he was on vacation.

Colleen says, “This is the beauty of virtual learning – it can be done from anywhere!”

Colleen-horn1_IMG_24...Pittsford 7th grader Lauren Porter is also taking horn lessons with Colleen, and she’s from a Hochstein family. Lauren’s mother, Alissa Huston Porter, studied flute at Hochstein when she was younger. Great to see Lauren following in her mother’s footsteps with a wind instrument! Colleen tells us that Lauren learned three new short solo pieces over the course of the summer and also mastered all of her major scales.

Colleen-horn2_IMG_24...Dylan Mayall, an 8th grader at The Harley School, participated in Junior Wind Symphony at Hochstein last fall. He is hoping to repeat that experience this year, assuming that Hochstein will be able to run that program safely. (Junior Winds has been postponed until March-April 2021.) This summer, Dylan learned the Mozart Horn Concerto No. 1.

Congratulations to all of our students who have persisted with their lessons online through these difficult times.

Continued participation in music and dance classes has allowed us all to keep a measure of normalcy in our lives. This is a gift and Hochstein will do what is necessary to continue to offer that gift to our students.
