Meet Jackie, our Expressive Arts “Artist of the Month”!
Jackie writes: “I’m 21 and have multiple disabilities. I’ve been coming to Hochstein since 2011. At first, I just took art and music therapies. Then I added photography and dance. The classes have helped me develop my talents. My instructors are patient when I’m learning something new. They really listen to what I want to do.”
Jackie explains further, “In my music therapy sessions, I’ve played many hand instruments. Now I’m learning to play the drums and piano. I also enjoy mashing songs to sing for recitals.”
She goes on to say, “Art therapy has let me express my creativity. I’ve worked with many media and techniques. Over the summer, my art therapist helped me design a fairy house. It won ‘most whimsical’ at the Corn Hill Arts Festival and was even displayed at the Garden Factory. More of my artwork will also be featured in Hochstein’s Art Show at Episcopal Senior Life in October 2019.
“I enjoy taking individual dance lessons. It helps me learn the steps easier than in a group. I’m taking tap now. I hope to take African dance in the future.”
Thank you, Jackie! We are honored to work with you at Hochstein. Jackie’s story, alongside her beautiful artwork, is featured in the Expressive Arts display case near Hochstein’s main office. Be sure to check it out next time you’re here at Hochstein.
