The Suzuki Method, developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, fosters early collaborative learning through a strong bond between child, parent/caregiver, and teacher. Inspired by how children learn to speak, it nurtures curiosity, creativity, and musical growth. Beyond joy in music-making, Suzuki builds self-discipline, focus, memory, confidence, and trusted relationships.
Hochstein’s Suzuki Program supports students from early childhood through pre-teen years with individual lessons and group classes at all levels, helping many develop the skills to thrive in chamber music and orchestral programs. Any Rochester-area Suzuki student without access to group classes is welcome to join.
Your child is ready for Suzuki if they are potty-trained, remain engaged when you speak with them, can follow simple two-step directions, and accept help when it is given. You, as the parent or caregiver, are ready if you can attend all individual lessons and group classes and are available and willing to help your child practice at home. If you answered yes to all of the above, you and your child are ready!
Call (585) 454-4596 to enroll and for general information. Hochstein welcomes and encourages parent/caregivers of prospective students to observe lessons and group classes before enrolling in the program. Contact us to arrange an observation time.
The Suzuki Method engages three equal partners—the child, parent or caregiver, and teacher—forming the “Suzuki Triangle.” Children can begin Suzuki Strings at age 3, studying violin, viola, harp, or flute with faculty trained in Suzuki Pedagogy and Philosophy.
Individual lessons (30–60 minutes) are paired with weekly group classes for strings and flute, monthly group classes for harp. Lessons and classes are equally important, with year-long parent guidance to support practice. Consistent attendance by the same parent or caregiver is strongly recommended for each child’s progress.
