Hochstein’s Creativity Lab is dedicated to exploring a variety of creative practices and cultivating the next generation of makers and innovators — from music theory and improvisation to composition, songwriting, and beyond.
Have you always dreamt of writing music, making visual art, or writing stories, but find yourself intimidated by the act of creation? The Creativity Lab offers lessons and workshops covering fundamentals like music theory, drawing basics, and the essentials of improvisation — as well as advanced studies including making comic books and graphic novels, composing in a variety of styles, advanced songwriting, and jazz improvisation. Independent Study is also available on a variety of topics. Mastery of one discipline tends to open doors into others, giving students a safe space for self-discovery and healthy expression.
The Creativity Lab is outfitted with 8 linked iMac computers with piano keyboards, plus a teacher station. Students access music notation and digital audio workstation applications adaptable to just about every genre of music. Director Dr. Dave Chisholm hosts monthly Saturday afternoon pop-up events, short-run workshops, and open lab hours for drop-in visits throughout the school year.
