Since 1920, Hochstein has been a home for serious musical study in Rochester. Our competitions are an extension of that mission — giving advanced students the opportunity to perform before professional juries, earn recognition in the community, and experience the standard of excellence that has defined this school for more than a century.

David Hochstein Recital Competition
About the Competition
Initiated in 1991 in memory of David Hochstein — a Rochester native and world-class violinist killed in World War I — the David Hochstein Recital Competition celebrates and encourages outstanding musical talent and achievement among young musicians in our community. The competition is open to advanced students in grades 10–12 in the nine-county region surrounding Rochester. Musicians prepare challenging music in varied styles and perform before juries of noted professional artists. Winners are presented in recital in the Hochstein Performance Hall and recorded for future broadcast on WXXI-FM Classical 91.5. The David Hochstein Recital Competition is made possible by The Nasipak Family.
