Julia Goodwin

Dr. Julia Goodwin is a pianist, organist, and cultural historian. She holds a B.Mus. in piano performance from Oberlin College, an M.A. in history from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a Ph.D. in modern European history from the University of Rochester.

She has performed and taught extensively in the United States and New Zealand and is currently the organist for the Episcopal Church Home on Mount Hope Avenue.

Dr. Goodwin is a former music faculty member of Oregon State University (2007-2016), where she taught private piano lessons, group piano classes, keyboard music theory labs, music appreciation, and music history.

Her scholarly research focuses on 20th-Century German cultural history, especially the development of memorial music and musical commemoration. She is the co-author of “The Will to Heal: Gesamtkunstwerk and Memorial Music Since 1945,” an essay in Berghahn’s new volume titled The Total Work of Art: Foundations, Articulations, Inspirations, which was published in July 2016.

Dr. Goodwin has taught several courses in the Humanities Department at Eastman School of Music, most recently “Wagner’s Germany” (Fall 2018).
