Hochstein Jazz Combos bring together advanced student and adult musicians to explore jazz as a small ensemble — building performance skills, repertoire knowledge, and the art of improvisation under expert coaching.
Under the leadership of Richard DeLaney, Hochstein’s Jazz Studies Program is designed to provide aspiring jazz musicians with performance experience, standard performance practice, and exposure to repertoire through small ensembles, improvisation, and the study of jazz styles. Weekly rehearsals and coaching sessions develop musicianship and stagecraft, giving students the opportunity to explore jazz as a new venue or to build on skills already learned. Ensembles perform in concerts, community events, and the Jazz Master Class Series — where students perform for and alongside professional jazz musicians in an informal recital setting.
Jazz combos are formed with students of compatible ages and abilities. Open to advanced students in grades 7–12 (NYSSMA Level 4–6 or equivalent) and adults. Instruments accepted include piano, acoustic and electric bass, drum set, electric guitar, strings, woodwinds, and brass. Strong reading skills and the ability to sight-read are required.
A placement audition is required for all applicants and consists of sight-reading, selected scales in 2–4 octaves from all major and minor keys, and a performance of a prepared selection. Auditions are held in early September with ongoing auditions available throughout the year. Contact us at (585) 454-4596 to schedule.
