Formed in 2015, the quintet fivebyfive focuses on engaging audiences in the collaborative spirit and creativity of modern chamber music. Featuring Laura Lentz, flute; Marcy Bacon, clarinet; Sungmin Shin, electric guitar; Eric Polenik, bass; and Haeyeun Jeun, piano.
For this concert, they will perform Rounder Songs by Patrick Burke and Emily Pinkerton, with Emily Pinkerton on vocals and banjo. Rounder Songs is a song cycle for voice, banjo, and chamber ensemble that brings together the sounds of 21st-century post-minimalist classical music and North American old-time. The work is based on public domain songs and legends from Kentucky and West Virginia that tell the stories of several “rounders”: rural drifters who include a gambler, a murderer, and a mill laborer who strikes a deal with the devil. Included are the traditional songs "Red Rocking Chair," "Pretty Polly," and "Darling Corey."
The program also includes the premiere of a new work by Glenn McClure - What Lies Below was written for the quintet inspired by recent research on Hawaiian volcanoes.
Hosted by WXXI Classical 91.5’s Mona Seghatoleslami and broadcast live on WXXI Classical 91.5/ 90.3 FM, Live from Hochstein is the longest-running live broadcast concert series in Western New York.
This free weekly "brown-bag" concert series gives downtown business people, teachers, families, students, and friends an opportunity to enjoy classical music by outstanding musicians, including soloists, duets, and small ensembles.
Sidney and Barbara Sobel have provided continuous underwriting of the Live from Hochstein Broadcast & Concert Series since 1993.
Live from Hochstein is also made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
