Hochstein Brass Faculty - Apollo Lee

Chun Kong (Apollo) Lee is a Doctoral Candidate at the Eastman School of Music. He holds a Bachelor of Music (Honors) degree and a Performance Diploma from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, a Graduate Performance Diploma from Boston Conservatory, and a Masters of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the Eastman School of Music.

Lee is a dedicated instructor who loves working with students of all levels and sharing his knowledge of trumpet playing. Previously, he served as trumpet faculty of the Education Institute of Hong Kong. He has taught secondary trumpet lessons to University of Rochester students through the Eastman School of Music. As a brass department teaching assistant for the Boston Conservatory, he tutored high and low brass instrument students in practice techniques. He was formerly the band conductor and brass instructor at S.K.H. Bishop Baker Secondary School (Hong Kong), high brass instructor at Po Leung Kuk Lee Shing Pik College (Hong Kong) and Chinese Methodist School North Point (Hong Kong), and a private trumpet instructor for the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Lee is an active and diverse freelance musician who has appeared internationally in symphonic, opera, ballet, chamber music, film music, and musical theater productions. From 2010 to 2012, Lee served as principal trumpet of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong. In 2017, he was also invited to perform with the Malaysia Bach Festival Orchestra as guest principal trumpet.

As an orchestral trumpeter, Lee has appeared frequently with professional orchestras such as the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta Orchestra, Macau Orchestra, Cape Symphony Orchestra (Cape Cod), Plymouth Philharmonic, Haffner Sinfonietta (Boston), Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and Symphoria in Syracuse.

What inspires me: Listening to recordings and live concerts by famous trumpeters and orchestras from different places in the world.

Why the arts matter: Arts can enrich life in many different ways. It provides a space for creativity, communication, reflection, and connection. Many of my most treasured friendships have been formed through music and collaboration on artistic projects.

My favorite local restaurant: That’s a tough one because Rochester has many wonderful restaurants! White Swan, Naan-Tastic, Golden Port Dim Sum Restaurant, Ludwig’s Center Stage Café … too many to list them all!

Favorite things to do: Spending time at home with my wife and my cat!

Favorite place(s) to travel: Hong Kong, Tokyo, Boston, Shanghai, Jeju Island … too many!
