Saturday mornings, possible weekday afternoons

2021-22 School Year (September – June)

Note: we are no longer accepting applications to this job posting (June 22, 2021)

The Hochstein School seeks an enthusiastic, imaginative, qualified teacher to join our Music FUNdamentals and Ensembles Departments. Descriptions are detailed below. Hochstein prefers to hire one candidate to cover both areas, but will consider applicants to cover separate areas, as appropriate.

Children’s Music Teacher – teaching Music FUNdamentals classes:

            Musical Stepping Stones, ages 4-5

            Musical Explorers, ages 5-7

These classes are activity-oriented, sequential, and focused on the development of basic musical skills, the enjoyment of music, and preparation and/or support for the study of a particular instrument. Children will experience and create musical elements such as beat, rhythm, pitch, melody, phrasing, tone color, and form through movement, singing, and use of pitched and unpitched instruments. The teacher will make use of a broad range of musical styles from multiple world music traditions and cultures.

Children’s Chorus Director:

Hochstein Little Singers, grades K-3

As a part of our successful singing community, Hochstein’s Little Singers is a beginning choral experience for budding young vocalists. Planting the seeds of a lifelong enjoyment of singing, Little Singers fosters this love by developing basic musicianship and introducing musical concepts of rhythm, tempo, and dynamics using music literature from many cultures of the world. The Hochstein Little Singers perform in December and June on “Hochstein Young Voices,” a program that also includes Hochstein Youth Singers and Hochstein Singers; additional performance opportunities are offered throughout the year. Professional accompanists are provided for performances and final rehearsals.

Our classrooms include a piano, playback equipment, an extensive Orff instrumentarium, and a variety of other age-appropriate instruments and materials.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, with experience teaching at pre-K and early elementary levels, as well as Orff and/or Kodaly training and experience.

The successful candidate will be able to:

  • provide a welcoming, nurturing environment for children of diverse backgrounds
  • offer a lively variety of musical activities to foster growth and development of musical skills
  • create imaginative curricula and concert programs
  • demonstrate and teach age-appropriate vocal technique
  • effectively utilize the piano and other instruments within class/rehearsal
  • communicate efficiently with parents and with Hochstein staff
  • work closely with Hochstein colleagues in Music FUNdamentals and Ensembles Departments
  • support Hochstein’s efforts to attract students to these classes

Position available September 2021. Hochstein classes run September – June (36 weeks). Music FUNdamentals classes may also be offered in future summer sessions (July – mid-August).
