String students with prior ensemble experience will have the opportunity
to hone orchestral reading and orchestral skills while rehearsing and performing
a wide variety of repertoire ranging from classical to contemporary. The Sinfonia
performs five concerts annually including joint concerts with other Hochstein
orchestras. Rehearsals take place at the nearby
Downtown United Presbyterian Church.

Hochstein Youth
Symphony Orchestra

A full orchestra (strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion) for advanced musicians. The Youth Symphony Orchestra promotes musical experience through the study and performance of standard orchestral repertoire, contemporary works, small ensembles and student concerto performances. Season repertoire includes Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary music. The HYSO toured Italy in Spring 2009 and plans to tour Ireland in Spring 2011.

Finger Lakes Concert Band

Thursdays, 7:30–9:30 pm at the Canandaigua Middle School
Comprised of adult instrumentalists from the Greater Finger Lakes community, the Finger Lakes
Concert Band rehearses weekly and gives several concerts per year featuring a wide variety of
music ranging from standard wind band literature and orchestral transcriptions to music of the
jazz and pop idioms. Auditions are not required. Musical competence will be determined by the
Music Director during a trial period of at least two weeks, but not to exceed more than one

Chamber Music Connection offers fun and challenging opportunities to play a unique and crucial role in a small group setting and helps develop musicianship as well as personal skills such as cooperation, leadership, poise, focus, and self-awareness. Trios, quartets, and quintets are formed of players with compatible ages and abilities, as permitted from the pool of applicants. Open to piano, strings, woodwinds, and brass. Opportunities and benefits of the program include: a minimum of 30 coachings during the 36-week school year with members of the Hochstein faculty, Antara Winds (guest artist woodwind quintet), master classes with guest artists, and performance opportunities at Hochstein and throughout the Greater Rochester area.

Chamber Music Connection Honors Ensembles: Based on individual placement auditions, a limited number of merit scholarships may be awarded to students who are in grades 9-12, who play at NYSSMA Level 6 or the equivalent, and who are studying with a private teacher. Honors Ensembles are expected to give several performances at Hochstein and in the community throughout the year. Upon confirmation, each group will receive specific registration information and curriculum requirements. Participants pay only an $80 Honors Ensemble fee.

Jazz Combos

Jazz combos formed with students of compatible ages and abilities. Open to
strings, piano, woodwinds, guitar, electric bass and percussion. Reading skills
and the ability to sight-read are necessary. A placement audition is required
and will consist of sight-reading, selected scales in 2-4 octaves from all
major and minor keys, and a performance of a prepared selection. Rehearsal times to be scheduled.

Honors Flute Choir

A choral experience with performance opportunities, leads toward a lifelong enjoyment of singing. Choir members learn vocal, ensemble, and performance skills and participate in ear–training and rhythm activities. Choirs have performed on numerous occasions at Hochstein and at community events. No audition is required for any of Hochstein's vocal ensembles.
Youth Singers

Saturdays, 9:30–11:00 am
This energetic ensemble sings in unison, two and three parts. Students
have fun learning vocal and rehearsal techniques by singing traditional choral
repertoire, folk songs, multi-cultural literature and spirited novelty pieces.
Youth Singers learn correct vocal production including proper vowel placement
and breathing, enunciation of consonants and correct posture, as well as listening
and ensemble skills. Singers will also improve their music reading skills
using Solfège and Kodaly Hand signals as part of the curriculum. Students
must be prepared to attend regularly scheduled rehearsals and performances
at Hochstein and throughout the community. Students in Grades 7–12 are welcome
to be a part of our more advanced Hochstein Singers, which continues
from 11:30 am–12:30 pm.
FEE:$8 registration fee; $360* tuition, payable in quarterly installments of $90. For students enrolled in individual lessons at Hochstein, tuition is $270 payable in quarterly installments of $67.50
Hochstein Singers

This ensemble is an extension of the Hochstein Youth Singers for our
older students. Students with unchanged voices participate in the Youth Singers
Saturday mornings from 9:30-11:00 am, take a snack break together for 30 minutes,
and then rehearse with the Hochstein Singers from 11:30 am–12:30 pm. Males
with changed voices join us from 11:00–12:30pm. Hochstein Singers combine
classical training with the joyful experience of music making. Participants
learn the rewards of achievement while building self esteem and mutual respect.
Repertoire includes choral literature of the world as well as that of our
diverse American communities.
FEE for Members of Youth Singers: No registration fee; $126* yearly tuition, payable in quarterly installments of $31.50. For students enrolled in individual lessons at Hochstein, tuition is $90 payable in quarterly installments of $22.50.
FEE for all other participants: $8 registration fee; *$216 yearly tuition, payable in quarterly installments of $54.
*TUITION ASSISTANCE Students requiring tuition assistance in order to enroll in any program at Hochstein may do so through the Dean’s Office. For children enrolled in individual lessons, reduced fees may apply if household income is less than $40,000. For children enrolling in classes only and for adults enrolling in individual lessons, reduced fees may apply if household income is less than $25,000. Verification of household income and completion of a tuition assistance application is due prior to registration.
