Finger Lakes Concert Band presents “Wearing o’ the Green” Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 12:10 pm on “Live from Hochstein”
The Finger Lakes Concert Band, directed by Brian Story, will present an expanded version of “Wearing o’ the Green” on Sunday, March 21 at 3:00 pm in the Hochstein Performance Hall. General admission tickets for the Sunday concert are $5; students 18 and younger are free. The two Irish celebration performances will include: “Irish Rhapsody” by Clare Grundman with folk melodies The Minstrel Boy, I Know Where I’m Going, Shepherd’s Lamb Reel, Cockles & Muscles, The Rakes of Mallow, and Kathleen O’Moore. Four of the six movements of the “Irish Suite” composed by Leroy Anderson will be presented: The Irish Washerwoman, The Rakes of Mallow, The Wearing of the Green, and The Girl I Left Behind. “Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune” by Philip Sparke contains “Slane,” an Irish folk song that appears towards the end, which is more familiar in its hymn tune version Be Thou My Vision. “Mannin Veen” which translates to “Dear Isle of Man” was written by Haydn Wood as an ode to where he spent most of his childhood. What celebration of St Patrick’s Day would be complete without the Irish tearjerker Danny Boy? Warren Barker arranges this version. Celtic Voyage by Melanie Donahue is inspired by the many hardships of the Irish immigrants; this piece brings hope of a new world, a new lease on life, and a second chance.
