Welcome from the Hochstein Dance Ensembles Director

Welcome Dancers!

Welcome to another year of dancing at Hochstein! If you are a serious dance student interested in gaining vital performing experience and enjoy exploring both classical and contemporary repertoire from various styles of dance, the Hochstein Scholarship Dance Ensemble is for you.  Members of the ensemble learn not only choreography, but invaluable tools to enhance their overall performance experience. Rehearsals, held in our elegant dance studios, focus on developing stage presence, performance preparation and etiquette, stage make up and costuming. Performances are regularly held in Hochstein’s Performance Hall with the unique opportunity to collaborate with live music when possible.  Other performances have been held in the community at Barnes and Noble, The Harley School, The Jewish Community Center, Eastman Theater, and Roberts Wesleyan College Art Center.

Recent performances included variations from The Nutcracker as well as a full production of Peter and Wolf which featured ballet, jazz, modern, character, and pantomime. The ensemble also had the opportunity to create a unique choreographic study and enhance a modern piece choreographed by one of their peers. Hochstein’s Scholarship Dance Ensemble is open to all dance students from the Greater Rochester area and auditions are held each year in October.  With a strong emphasis on technique, we focus on nurturing the whole dancer, and work towards developing each student’s potential in the art of dance.

Dance Ensembles at Hochstein

An important component of Hochstein's Intensive Training Program is the opportunity for students to participate in our scholarship ensembles – Junior Scholarship Dance Ensemble and Senior Scholarship Dance Ensemble. Entry into the ensembles is by audition (usually held sometime in October), and participants have the honor of performing at Winter and Spring Dance Galas, in addition to special Hochstein events such as the Presberg Ensembles Concert in May. There is also the opportunity for ensemble members to participate in Hochstein’s Merit Scholarship Competition for Dance, which is held sometime in late April or early May. Winners of the Merit Scholarship Competition perform on the Honors Convocation in June.

For more information about this program, please contact Diane Lewis, Dance Department Co-Chair and Ensemble Director, at diane.lewis@hochstein.org.
